Online gambling companies get in trouble with the use of deepfake ads, including celebrity images, for their own promotional benefit. AI is a great solution for combatting online crime and the spread of deepfake ads.
The ways of technology are truly something admirable, offering new and convenient ways for the industry to take things to the next level.
One of the biggest advancements is AI technology and the many beneficial ways it can be used to grow the industry and player interaction.
On the other hand, there are also various concerns regarding AI use, especially with deepfake advertisements. So much so that AI is also being implemented in an attempt to fight deepfake advertisements within the online gambling industry.
Problematic Ads
While AI can make things much easier, it seems that it can also lead to big trouble for users who are not careful. This was the case most recently when a gaming company got into trouble for using the Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar’s image for a deepfake promotion.
The use of a celebrity image is not the first and has been a regular occurrence with deepfake advertisements. The big problem is that these images are being used without permission.
Tendulkar made a statement on X (Twitter) saying that the videos are fake, and the misuse of technology is quite disturbing. He requested that anyone who sees things like this should report the videos, ads, and apps it appears on. Concluding that social media platforms need to stay alert and responsive to complaints. According to the cricket legend, swift action from social platforms is crucial to stop the spread of misinformation and deepfakes.
A Clear Threat
AI has continued to grow, increasing the chances of fakes and frauds. With deepfake being responsible for celebrity impersonations. Due to the expansion of AI in the mainstream, the approach to fraud has also changed, with operators getting ‘smart’ and using the growing tech to combat fraud.
Union Minister of Electronics and Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, expresses concern over the video shared by the cricket legend, saying that the spread of deep fakes and misinformation via AI is a clear threat to the safety and trust of Indian users as it is a legal violation which platforms should be preventing and removing.
Combating Deepfakes
According to the Group Director of Product Management at Eastnets, Shaun Smith-Taylor, the latest issue with deepfake ads using celebrity images clearly shows that it has made its way into the mainstream media, and AI is going to be an essential tool to combat the new threat of fraud.
Smith-Taylor continues to say that this does not just affect the advertising industry but also poses a threat to financial institutions wishing to verify identity during Know-Your-Customer checks. The concern is that this can also trick customers and employees into making fraudulent payments with account takeovers and involvement in other criminal activity.
He believes that the only way to deal with the threat is by checking the customer identity via a range of data points. This will include matching up online behavioural patterns, transaction history and social media interaction.
All of this will be much more efficient and less time-consuming through the use of AI, which has the ability to sift through large collections of data and come to a clear conclusion. This would also lead to ongoing real-time monitoring instead of one-off checks.
