Finnish gambling operator Paf show their ongoing commitment to player security and financial well-being by further lowering their annualised player loss limit as of January 1st, 2020.
One of the misunderstandings surrounding gambling as a business is that the more a player loses at a casino the “happier” the casino will be. The reality could not be further from the truth. While gambling is a for-profit business it is one that offers entertainment as a service first with the resultant profits needing to be scaled over time.
In short, a healthy online casino has a large happy consumer base who play regularly and spend well within their budgets over an extended period. These players feel valued, appreciated and entertained which results in brand loyalty and the long-term sustainability of the casino as a viable business.
✓Raising The Bar By Lowering Losses
Finnish gambling operator, Paf, has made a name for itself over the past few years by leading the charge in addressing problem gambling at a player level. This has included increasing contacts with payers to nearly 10,000 per year to head off problematic behaviours, encouraging players to use tools that clearly show the amount spent at Paf and of course the industry-first annual loss limit.
When looking to acquire a gambling licence in Sweden Paf recommended a har cap on player losses over a calendar year.
At the time Christer Fahlstedt, Paf CEO, said:
“The reputation of the gambling business is at a low, and concrete measures need to be taken in order to regain the trust of the public. We do not want to see people’s lives destroyed because of gambling addiction.”
Despite the recommendation not being implemented in the region Paf saw the value in it and adopted a €30,000 annual loss limit for all their players across all the territories they operate in.
✓Paf Lower Limits in 2020
Doubling down on the success they’ve seen in 2019 with the €30,000 loss limit Paf have decided to double down in 2020 by instituting an annualised loss cap of €25,000. This additional limitation could cost Paf as much €2 million a year, a loss Fahlstedt is a small price to pay for player security and well-being:
“We don’t just want to sit down and pat ourselves on the shoulder when we have done something good. A lower annual loss limit is good for our customers and it’s the most effective thing we can do,”
It is encouraging to see a gambling operator look at their business and realise that they can continue to thrive and be profitable while also considering the well-being of their patrons.
Paf Chief Responsibility Officer, Daniela Johansson has boldly challenged other gambling operators to follow their lead in this regard. We hope they do too.
