Betway Receive Token Slap on the Wrist from Swedish Gaming Authority

While it is true that the Swedish Gaming Authority, Spelinspektionen, fined the online casino and betting provider for contravening the regulator's bonus terms, the situation only further highlighted their commitment to “doing the right thing”.

According to Swedish regulations, players may only receive a single bonus from a gambling site. However, in June 2021 the company offered all their players, including those living in Sweden, access to a 200% match bonus which could be claimed multiple times.

In other cases, we have seen gambling authorities take harsh action against operators who transgress core regulations such as bonuses and anti-money laundering programs. However, in the case of Betway, the oversight resulted in the gambling giant being fined the confusing sum of 100,000 kr which translates to a mere €9,700.

The reason for this is due to the company taking proactive action when the error was spotted to reduce potential player harm, address the cause of the error, and report the transgression to the Gaming Authority themselves.

The Authority received a detailed report from Betway showing while 52 players claimed the bonus only 53 instances were credited meaning a single player received more than one offer. The operator contacted the players advising of the mistake and confirmed that none were “negatively affected financially”.

The ability for staff to make promotions live across markets was removed from their backend systems and all affected team members were sent for further training to avoid any similar errors in future.
