Floyd Mayweather Jr has been inspired by his late uncle Roger to become a great boxing trainer in his retirement.
Floyd Mayweather Jr retired as the best fighter of his generation and one of the most financially successful athletes in history.
With an illustrious prize-fighting career now behind him, the undefeated American has set his sights on a new ambitious goal after vowing to become one of the best boxing trainers in the world.
But can the 50-0 ring great emulate his success within the square-circle when he takes up a new role in the gym and other fighters’ corners?
There was plenty of speculation that ‘Money’ Mayweather would once again don his gloves and make yet another return to the ring in search of further riches later this year.
But recent tragedies in his personal life have seemingly derailed any such possible ventures. Instead, the retired five-division world champion seems set to pursue a coaching career after turning 43 years of age earlier this year.
His uncle and former trainer Roger Mayweather sadly passed away in March following ill health and he’s now aiming to take after his late mentor.
“I've had incredible trainers, which included my dad and uncle,” Mayweather stated recently.
“Due to the recent passing of my uncle Roger, I've felt inspired to help those around me the same way they have been there for me throughout my boxing career.”
New Career Pursuit
Mayweather has since been filmed teaching his eldest son Koraun and nephew Chris the basics of the sport in his famous gym during a time boxing has come to a standstill worldwide due to the global pandemic.
He also added that the lockdown in light of the coronavirus has “allowed me to see the importance of unity and helping others grow.”
“In a time where we must distance ourselves from others, it has allowed me to reflect on how I want to make a difference in people lives and help them achieve their goals.
“A true trainer wants the best out of their fighter and pushes them to the best of their abilities. I am new to helping people train as I've always been on the other side of the mitts.
“It has become a goal of mine to help others reach the best versions of themselves and walk with it in confidence. I want to leave an impression on those around me and allow them to see their potential.”
Mayweather has a wealth of experience and his prestigious career at the top of the sport could help propel him to further success in a new role as fighter-turned-coach.
The unbeaten pugilist was always a highly dedicated and motivated athlete throughout his entire career which spanned two decades.
Mayweather Vows to Succeed as Coach
That passion for boxing and his will to succeed may see him bring the best out of others, if his ego doesn’t get in the way as it has during his time as a promoter.
“I am new at training and so far I’ve been working with people with no boxing experience, therefore we are growing together,” he continued.
“But I promise you, I will be one of the best trainers in the world. Inspire and be inspired.”
So can he add to his legacy in boxing by becoming a great trainer after a legendary career? He has all the tools necessary to achieve his outlined target but not all great fighters have gone on to become great trainers.
There are instances of legendary boxers who haven’t enjoyed a smooth transition to coaching duties, though there are some of examples of past combatants that have earned much success in a switch of roles.
The likes of Jack Blackburn, Robert Garcia, John David Jackson, James ‘Buddy’ McGirt and, more notably for UK fans, Ricky Hatton and Rob McCracken, all became esteemed trainers after hanging up their gloves.
As well as both Mayweather’s late uncle Roger and father Floyd Snr, ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd will hope to use his invaluable ring experience to forge out a great coaching career overlooking the next generation of young boxers.
Mayweather was an incredible fighter all round, being both technically and tactically astute when he climbed through the ring ropes. His vast knowledge and attention to detail could well prove to be vital factors in this next pugilistic ambition outside the squared-circle, with this newest step potentially another future boost to his lasting legacy.
