Evolution Gaming is battling cyberattacks on its live casino streams across Asia. Surprised at the scale and complexity of the threat, the company has now bolstered its defences to protect its product and reputation.
Once a niche corner of online entertainment, the iGaming industry has exploded into a multi-billion-dollar global growth industry, but with that meteoric rise comes a dark undercurrent.
Among the most pressing concerns is streaming piracy, or more specifically, where unauthorised platforms hijack live casino feeds for illegal redistribution, particularly from premium providers like Evolution Gaming.
This compromises revenue and erodes user trust in the authenticity of the gaming experience.
Evolution Battles Cyber Attacks in Asia
As Evolution Gaming continues battling a wave of cyberattacks on its live casino streams across Asia, CEO Martin Carlesund said that the iGaming giant was initially surprised at the scale and complexity of the attacks, but added that the company had since significantly bolstered its defences.
In an interview following the release of the company’s Q2 2025 earnings, Carlesund stressed that this was a collective issue, essentially that an attack on one was an attack on all, and went on to add:
QuoteIf the industry isn’t concerned about this, that’s arrogance, and that’s dangerous.
The CEO's comments came amid ongoing efforts to counter increasingly sophisticated piracy operations, where cybercriminals have been hijacking Evolution’s live-streamed casino content and rebroadcasting it for several months.
Upgrades in ‘Technical Defences’
Carlesund said that the level of sophistication of the attacks had galvanised the company into action, resulting in Evolution making significant strides in its technical defences. The chief executive stated:
QuoteWe were caught a little off guard by the technology they were using to steal our stream, now we are gaining traction with the actions we’ve taken.
He likened the issue to problems faced by streaming sports providers, where illegal sites resell pirated broadcasts to unsuspecting consumers. This was achieved by hijacking the stream, overlaying their user interface, and charging consumers who were unaware that they were watching illegal content.
Carlesund emphasised that Evolution is now at the forefront of the technical fightback and doing “absolutely fantastic things to make our product much, much harder to hijack,” adding that they were determined to defend their product and innovations.
Countering the Persistent Piracy Threat
Evolution Gaming, renowned for its high-end live dealer streams, employs digital watermarking, forensic tracking and real-time content monitoring to trace and shut down pirated streams.
Their systems integrate multi-layered encryption, tokenised access and DRM (Digital Rights Management) protocols to ensure only verified users can view and interact with live content.
Additionally, partnerships with cybersecurity firms and law enforcement agencies help the company swiftly issue takedown notices and pursue violators across jurisdictions.
The Battle Against Piracy: A Long-Term Effort
Carlesund said the fight against piracy will be an ongoing issue and that for Evolution, right now it relates to Asia, but could turn into a wider issue.
Evolution is working tirelessly and focusing on internal countermeasures and technological innovation to protect its product and reputation, but the fight against piracy will require a sustained, long-term effort.
