Looking back on more than 40 years of entertainment and adventure it is hard to think that there was ever a universe, no matter how far away, where Star Wars was not an instantly recognisable brand name.

Yet when George Lucas first filmed the original epic space opera back in 1977 not even the main cast believed it would be anything other than a one-off. Yet what written as a trilogy has evolved into 9 films (with more to come), animated series like the Clone Wars, live actions series such as The Mandalorian, books, video games and much more, a veritable empire worth more than $70 billion!

May 4th is recognised around the world as Star Wars day by avid fans of the franchise. It’s the one day where Jedi supporters and minions of the dark side will come together to celebrate their favourite scenes, argue about who shot first and whether or not a 12 parsec Kessel run is actually viable.

The choice of date is a pithy one, with a mainstay of the universe being the greeting: “May the Force be with you”. With such an easy pun ripe for the picking how could Star Wars fans pick any other day but May 4th as their day of celebration?
