The new set of provisions in Malta’s Gaming Act will strengthen the regulatory position of the MGA, giving it much bigger enforcement powers and enabling it to offer even better support for the players.
One of the biggest gambling regulators in the industry, the Malta Gambling Authority (MGA) is set to take things to a new level thanks to the latest set of provisions to be included in the national Gaming Act. These new provisions have already been passed by the Malta Parliament and the country is just waiting for the go-ahead from the European Union to start the implementation.
Creating a Safer Gaming Environment
The revamped Gaming Act is aimed at creating a safer, even more regulated environment, with a strong emphasis on the player protection. One of the provisions plans for the formation of the Player Support Unit, which will act as a dedicated mediator in different disputes between the players and the MGA-licensed sites.
In addition to this, new rules dictate that the operators will have to implement more serious measures to help fight problem gambling and enact stricter controls when it comes to the source of money used for sports betting and other gambling activities.
Setting Up for the Future
According to Heathcliff Farrugia, the MGA Chief Executive Officer, this is a very important milestone for the regulator. The new provisions will help establish a much more robust regulatory framework thanks to increased enforcement powers, laying foundations for the future. This feeling was echoed by other country’s officials, who believe the MGA will help not just protect players but also advise the Government along the way on necessary changes and tweaks.
If there are no objections from the EU, the changes should come into force shortly, as early as the start of July 2018 for remote gambling operators and January 2019 for land-based casinos.
