Netherlands Continues on the Road to Gambling Regulation Success

The Netherlands is the youngest regulated online gambling market in Europe, and since the Dutch market opened its doors in October last year, everyone wants a piece of the cake. As a fledgling with a unique approach to the remote gambling industry, the outcome remains uncertain, but the current state of affairs indicates success. 

Although the Dutch government implemented all-encompassing gambling regulations to offer its citizens a safe space to wager, certain decisions caused the launch to include only a few providers. Limited options posed a risk to successful channelisation, but 10 months later, promising results tell a different story.

Announcements of top providers entering the region confirm how the country’s gambling regulation attracts the right businesses.

 Regulated Landscape Taking Shape

Gambling is a long-standing pastime in the Netherlands, with certain iconic land-based casinos boasting a history of nearly half a century. The Dutch government had regulations in place for physical venues, but until last year, punters who took part in remote gambling faced the uncertainty of offshore providers. 

In response to the enormous demand for online gambling in the region, the government completed and enforced the updated gambling policies to include legal igaming. A highly controversial decision to force illegal providers out of the country led to a tiny list of license holders when the market launched in October. Any operator that wished to receive a Dutch license had to withdraw completely if they offered gambling services to Dutch players before October 2021. 

Despite a small list of licensed operators, the region experienced very positive results in the first half year following the launch. Part of the new regulatory regime includes a serious clamp down on black market operators, and as the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) eradicates illegal options, licensed platforms gain more business. 

 Adapting Regulatory Approaches

The KSA announced the expiration of the operator exclusion period, and this allowed those gambling businesses who voluntarily stepped away from the Netherlands to submit license applications. Since April 2022, regular announcements surface about new providers in the Dutch region.

Original laws in the country’s remote gambling decree allowed for certain freedoms few other regions permit. They imposed no Draconian limits at the onset of the regulated industry, and although some mandatory limits surfaced later, operators still find the Dutch market highly attractive and lucrative. 

Perhaps it is the country’s fluid approach to law-making that positions it as the best up-and-coming gambling region in the world. 

 New Options for Dutch Gamblers

Ten months after the market launch, the total number of approved operators has more than doubled, and software providers continuously announce agreements to provide new games in the Netherlands. Better legal options ensure the continuous attraction of gamblers to licensed vendors, away from the black-market options. 

Exciting new options include top software providers like SYNOT Games, Push Gaming, and Wazdan. By solidifying the legal offering to its players, the Dutch regulator continues on course to exemplary gambling regulation.
