NHS Managing UK Gambling Health: Good or Bad?

UK charity GambleAware has announced the impending “managed closure” of its services following the implementation of the UK’s statutory levy, which is expected to raise up to £100 million per year.

The NHS is now mandated to take over third sector organisations, such as GambleAware, as the chief administrator of the treatment and prevention of gambling harm.

The distinguished charity has functioned as the commissioner of gambling harm treatment since its foundation, but will now initiate a shutdown of its operations by the end of March 2026.

GambleAware’s Positive Response

Following changes implemented by the government, gaming operators in the UK are now compelled to contribute to a statutory levy to support research, education and treatment, with contributions determined by companies’ gross gambling yield. 

Andy Boucher, Chair of Trustees at GambleAware, commenting on the work historically delivered by his organisation transitioning to the ambit of the UK government and new commissioners, said:

“We have advocated for the introduction of a statutory system for many years and are proud of our contribution to its implementation. Alongside this, we are also proud of the impact GambleAware’s prevention and treatment activity has had in supporting tens of thousands of people over the years.”

Whilst Boucher welcomed the new era, he urged the NHS England and related role players, as well as appropriate bodies in Scotland and Wales, to ‘build upon the current system’s achievements and insights to ensure learnings are carried forward.’

The Minister for Gambling, Baroness Twycross, who is charged with leading the new approach to gambling harm, praised the work of GambleAware and the wider third sector. Twycross promised that the new levy would build on the work of such organisations, adding that managing a smooth transition was paramount.

Is the NHS Managing Gambling Health in the UK a Positive Change? 

Despite GambleAware’s positive utterings on gambling harm treatment in the UK being managed by the NHS, many have lamented the charity's closure, describing the development as a “tragedy.”

Whilst the NHS undoubtedly has the expertise in healthcare provision, shifting problem gambling treatment from a specialised charity to a government entity whose focus is the broader healthcare needs of the entire community risks undermining deep-rooted and trusted relationships and years of tailored experience.

Akin to handing over animal rescue to a veterinary clinic - competence is guaranteed. However, the clinic would be lacking the charity's established bond and history, raising the question of whether this transition to the NHS will serve affected individuals as effectively as GambleAware.
