Q&A with BF Games: Designing Slots That Players Want to Spin

We had the opportunity to sit down with Wiktoria Hanak, Head of Account Management at BF Games, to learn more about how the company designs its game releases with players in mind.

Wiktoria gives us a personal insight into how the company chooses a game category, design style, mathematical model and many other intriguing aspects of the igaming development process.

Q. For readers who may not be familiar with BF Games, how would you describe the company, and what makes your approach to online casino games different?

From where I sit in account management, BF Games isn't just about building good games; it's about making sure those games actually succeed in a partner's lobby. We work hand in hand with our creative team, but our job is relationships, understanding the audience of each online casino, positioning titles correctly, and staying responsive whenever partners need something adjusted quickly. 

That partnership-first mindset, treating every operator as a long-term relationship rather than a one-off transaction, is what I believe sets our approach apart from other suppliers in this competitive industry.

Q. BF Games has a fairly broad portfolio, ranging from classic fruit slots to more feature-rich video slots and dice games. How do you decide what kind of game to create next?

Portfolio decisions are shaped heavily by what we hear directly from operators day to day. We diversify across fruit slots, feature-rich slots and dice games because our partners serve very different player bases, and no single title covers all of them equally well. We feed performance data and partner feedback back to the product side constantly, flagging which mechanics or themes are resonating in specific markets right now. That direct channel between account management and game development is really what keeps our whole roadmap grounded in real demand rather than pure guesswork. 

Q. When players browse a casino lobby, the visual design is often the first thing that makes them stop and look at a game. What goes into creating a BF Games title that catches a player's eye?

As account management, our role starts once the art team has done its job; we make sure the right visuals actually reach the right eyes at exactly the right moment. That means working closely with each operator on how a title is positioned in their lobby, building tailored thumbnails when needed, and understanding how their specific site is structured so our games stand out clearly next to titles from other providers.

A beautifully designed casino game means absolutely nothing if it's buried on far rows in a casino's lobby; our job is making sure that this basically never happens to any of our titles.

Q. Terms such as RTP, volatility and hit rate can sound quite technical to players. In simple terms, what do these mathematical characteristics tell someone about the kind of experience they can expect from a slot?

These terms sound technical, but they are actually quite simple once broken down. RTP (return-to-player) tells you how much of players' money comes back over time- say 96%- meaning that for every €100 wagered, €96 eventually returns to players. It's a long-term average, not a guarantee for one session.

Volatility describes how wins are spread out; low volatility means small, frequent wins, and high volatility means longer waits for much bigger prizes. Hit rate is simply how often you win anything at all, big or small.

Together, these numbers tell operators and players exactly what kind of an experience the game offers. 

Q. Is there a particular type of mathematical model that BF Games finds works especially well for players — for example, frequent smaller wins versus less frequent but potentially larger wins? Or does that depend entirely on the game?

We deliberately build a very broad portfolio (everything from very low to very high volatility), because volatility is one of the biggest factors players use to choose a game in the first place. Preferences shift depending on the player and often by market too. If I had to generalise, we do see a lean toward medium-to-high volatility overall.

That said, this isn't guesswork — we look closely at performance data from live games to see what's actually resonating with players in different markets, and that feeds directly into how we design the math models for new titles.

So rather than betting on one 'winning formula,' our approach is to make sure the right math model exists for every type of player — the best model really does depend on the game, the theme, and all the relevant data.

Q. BF Games also has a strong focus on classic-style slots. Why do you think relatively simple games still appeal to players when modern slots can include increasingly complex features?

From an account management perspective, classic-style slots remain some of our easiest titles to place with operators, because they're still modern games, just built on very different principles. Faster gameplay, easier-to-read rules, and few or no complex bonus features lower the barrier for new players everywhere.

That simplicity also fits mobile-first play perfectly; players can jump in for a quick session on a break or a train and play as many fast rounds as they like. It's not that complex features made simple games outdated; both styles just serve different moments in a player's day. 

Q. Let’s turn to your upcoming release, Silver Coins. At first glance, it has a very classic 3x3 slot layout and five fixed paylines. What was the idea behind combining that familiar format with modern collection and respin features?

Silver Coins isn't a completely new idea for us. Our biggest hit last year, Magnetic Coins, ran on similar math, and its success came from combining a deceptively simple layout with a much richer mechanic underneath.

From a commercial perspective, Extra Chance is a great option to offer operators because it lets players choose their own risk level. The Magnet Bonus can be triggered directly by landing BONUS symbols on all three reels, but it can also be sparked at random mid-spin through the Pile of Coins feature. Extra Chance simply doubles the odds of that random Pile of Coins trigger firing, for a 40% increase to the stake, everything else, line payouts and regular winning combinations, stays identical.
