UK Gambling Industry Welcomes New DCMS Ministers

Lisa Nandy and Stephanie Peacock will now be steering the Department for Digital Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) following Keir Starmer’s landslide Labor Party victory to the Premiership position. Lisa Nandy, the Wigan Member of Parliament, is the Secretary of State, Culture, Media and Sport and is joined by Stephanie Peacock, appointed as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the DCMS. Peacock is the Member of Parliament for Barnsley South.

Extending his congratulations on behalf of the 110,000 people whose jobs rely on the regulated betting and gaming industry, BGC Chair Michael Dugher welcomed the move to make those appointments. Dugher welcomed the early initiative taken by the new Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, to bring more investments in grassroots sports. The national program, which permitted local clubs to take over the pitches and facilities of struggling councils, has also received the go-ahead to become a national program.

In his congratulatory statement, Dugher said:

I would like to assure them both that they will have the full support and backing of this sector as we work together to drive economic growth and continue raising standards on safe betting and gaming.”

What Do the Appointments Tell Us About the Future of UK’s Gambling Industry?

Lisa isn’t a new name in UK politics, having held an elective seat as a Member of Parliament for Wigan since 2010. She has a background in social justice and community development. She has previously held shadow cabinet positions, including the Shadow Secretary of State for International Development and the Shadow Secretary of State for Housing. Her earlier career, which focused on social justice initiatives, paints a person whom we expect to shine a social light on her new role, emphasizing cultural enrichment in the country and great support for the media.

On the other hand, Stephanie Peacock has been the Member of Parliament for Barnsley East since 2017. Her background includes working as a trade unionist with the GMB. She mainly focused on workers’ rights and public services in this role. During her role as the shadow minister for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, it was an open secret that Peacock was a firm supporter of Safer Gambling Week. The industry is well aware of her opinions on gambling. As a matter of fact, she was one of the speakers at the BGC’s AGM this year. She also played a role in the BGC’s Grand National Charity Bet Campaign, which raised funds for several UK charities.

In her address at the BGC AGM this year, Stephanie briefly described Labor’s policies on regulated gambling. Part of her speech read:

“Labor recognizes that almost half of adults participate in some form of gambling, with the majority doing so safely and in moderation. From bingo to the races, many forms of gambling are rightly considered part of our British cultural tradition… Further to this, I know the success of the sector is vital for the economy more broadly, whether that’s betting shops, casinos, online betting, and gaming or the companies that develop games.”

So, having looked at both profiles of the persons at the helm of the DCMS, we can expect lots of social initiatives that will target the well-being of players around the UK. Both Nandy and Peacock are expected to focus on ensuring responsible gambling practices are adhered to in the gambling scene while promoting its growth.

It is also worth noting that the Labor Party’s manifesto, as released in the run-up to the election, highlighted the need to reform both the media and cultural sectors. Part of this reform involves taking a more balanced approach towards gambling regulations to protect a highly vulnerable population while at the same time supporting the industry’s economic contributions.

BACTA Also Expresses Welcomed the New Appointments

On their part, BACTA (British Amusement Catering Trade Association), which serves the interests of the amusement and gaming machine industry, also announced its full support for new ministerial appointments.

As such, the trade body has already rolled out plans for increased collaboration with the country’s new leadership. While expanding on its core initiatives, BACTA’s Executive Director George McGregor stated:

“This is the first occasion in the two decades that I have worked with Bacta that we have systematically mapped MPs with members. We have used the general election outcome to create a geopolitical footprint in the industry… It will be the central nervous system guiding our political engagement and is a much more efficient way of putting Bacta members in front of their constituency MPs in order to present the case for the industry, in particular, the importance of getting reforms recommended by the White Paper over the line.”
