UK National Lottery Crushes Records With £8bn in Sales

Camelot UK Lotteries Limited, the licensed operator of the UK National Lottery, has announced that the overall sale of lottery tickets for an entire financial year crossed £8 billion for the first time. This impressive sales revenue volume marks a new record high for the UK National Lottery after outstanding growth across all product segments, including lottery tickets, scratchers, and online games.

The figures were announced on June 10th, reporting a total of £8.37 billion in national lottery sales between April 1st, 2020, and March 31st, 2021, the 2020/21 financial year. Compared to the 2019/2020 fiscal year, the UK Nationally made £468.8 million more in sales over the just-completed financial year.

This performance is particularly remarkable given that the Coronavirus pandemic had at some point affected sales in the spring of 2020. The lottery operator reported that it resorted to “swift interventions supported a speedy recovery” to turn things around. Thanks to the record shattering sales, the National Lottery Distributors managed to channel a cool £1.2 billion towards COVID-19 relief initiatives in the UK. In fact, outside the UK government, the lottery was the single largest financial benefactor to the nation’s pandemic relief projects. Overall, for the whole financial year, the lottery donated a total of £1.9 billion to Good Cause efforts across the United Kingdom.

While announcing the UK National Lottery results, Nigel Railton, the Camelot CEO, said:

A New Millionaire Everyday Plus Billions More in Payouts

In the report, Camelot also announced that in the just-concluded fiscal year, the UK National Lottery paid out over £4.85 billion to winners. This was about £350 million more than the amount that players received from prizes in 2019/20 draws and games. Further, the lottery games created a total of 389 new millionaires, which can be equated to creating more than one new millionaire in the UK every single day!

Camelot’s chairperson, Sir Hugh Robertson, welcomed the stellar performance in a statement saying:

“This is the fourth consecutive year of rising sales since our strategic review in 2017. The National Lottery has delivered for the UK again this year, with the highest-ever returns for Good Causes from sales alone. A remarkable £1.2 billion has been distributed to help the country respond to the impact of coronavirus. Without this money, many organisations would have ceased to function.”

In the briefing, Sir Robertson also saluted to customers, partners, and the government for contributing to Camelot’s shining success for the 2020/21 financial year. He added:

Tremendous Growth for Online and Mobile Lottery Sales

Predictably, the pandemic wave pushed a record number of Brits stuck at home to digital forms of lottery games. This switch to digital lottery options heavily compensated for the revenue deficit caused by forced closures of retail stores. Camelot, the National Lottery Operator, on its part also moved swiftly to pump more investment into digital channels to ensure that it could accommodate the new spike in traffic.

So, looking at digital sales alone, the UK National Lottery blew past previous records to bring in over £3.5 billion from online and mobile platforms, which is £1.05 billion more, or 42.8% higher year on year. The growth was driven by 2.7 million new player registrations who signed up for online and mobile lottery services. Under the digital lottery vertical, mobile players primarily via The National Lottery’s apps spent more than £2.48 billion in the games, effectively setting a new record for mobile sales. This was £876.4 million more than the mobile expenditure for the 2019/20 fiscal year.

With such a fantastic growth trend, it is no surprise that the UK National Lottery is the world’s largest digital lottery by revenue. While announcing the 2020/21 fiscal year performance, CEO Nigel Railton also acknowledged the role that Camelot’s staffers played in the achievement especially during the trying pandemic times and how the company reciprocated their hard work to the point of winning an accolade. He added:
