Norway's national lottery apologises as thousands are erroneously informed of inflated dividends due to a coding error. We delve into the fallout surrounding the notification of the faulty figures.
Whether it's the cascading coins of your favourite slot machine or the eagerly anticipated drop of the roulette ball, there’s nothing quite like the jubilation of hitting it big.
But every silver lining has its cloud, and the exhilaration of a momentous win can quickly evaporate when an unexpected twist develops, turning exultation to frustration. Fortunately, buzzkill moments are few and far between in the online gaming universe once a win is trumpeted, but they do occur.

Lottery Dreams Dashed by Technical Error
Norway's national lottery has apologised after thousands of players were mistakenly told that they had won life-altering sums in the Eurojackpot draw due to a coding error.
Norsk Tipping receives the prize amounts in euros from Germany, then converts them to Norwegian kroner. However, it was during the conversion process that an error occurred and winnings were multiplied by 100, instead of being divided by 100, the company announced.
Notifications of Inflated Payouts:
Norsk Tipping sent notifications to customers indicating the mistakenly inflated winnings before issuing a correction, sincerely apologising to “everyone who was notified of an incorrect prize amount.”
The company blamed the problem on a “manual coding error,” adding that no customers had received the “wrong prize.”
Norsk Tipping Delivers Apology Instead of Winnings
In a later statement, Norsk Tipping CEO Tonja Sagstuen apologised for disappointing so many and said she understood people’s anger over the error, adding:
QuoteI received many messages from people who had managed to make plans for holidays, buying an apartment or renovating before they realised that the amount was wrong. To them, I can only say: Sorry, but I understand that is a small consolation.
Sagstuen later stepped down and was replaced by acting CEO Vegar Strand, who issued another apology to everyone affected by the issue, adding that the company was “working intensely” to ensure a similar error doesn’t occur again.
As no one correctly matched all of the winning numbers, the Eurojackpot reached 377 million Norwegian kroner and rolled over to the next draw.
UK High Court Awards Player Her Due Amid Error
Not all gambling sites are lucky enough to have such lenient gambling regulations on their side. In a recent case, the UK High Court ruled that Paddy Power must pay a Gloucestershire gardener her £1 million in winnings she was initially informed she had won, but was later told was an error.
Corrine Durber played one of the operator’s games and received an on-screen message confirming she had won the “Monster Jackpot” worth £1,097,132.71, but later found out she had won the smaller “Daily Jackpot” of £20,265.14 due to a “game display malfunction.”
In his judgment, Mr Justice Ritchie ruled in her favour, stating that the principle of “what you see is what you get” applies to online gambling and that customers expect game results displayed to be accurate.
