Who could Gervonta Davis fight next?

The career of Gervonta Davis reached a new high recently in Texas. Making his pay-per-view main event debut live on Showtime Sports, ‘Tank’ rallied to an incredible knockout victory over Leo Santa Cruz.

In a blistering start to the bout, both men were landing clean shots but the power and pressure was coming from the naturally bigger fighter Davis. 

After putting on a solid performance and withstanding the pressure from ‘Tank’ for six rounds, the end eventually came in emphatic fashion. 

Davis took a right hand from Santa Cruz, caught a second with his glove then slipped a third successive punch and delivered a devastating left uppercut right on the chin of his Mexican rival. 

The four-division world champion crumbled into the corner of the ring and took quite some time before being lifted to his corner stool. ‘Tank’ had prevailed on the biggest night of his career so far in dramatic style, capturing what looks likely of being the KO of the Year in most people’s eyes. 

Along with that, he added the WBA super-featherweight belt to his already-owned WBA lightweight crown. Options are aplenty now for the latest PPV and pound-for-pound star, who is guided closely by promoter and legendary fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. 

So, who will be the next opponent for boxing’s newest Box Office attraction? Here are potential options going forward for ‘Tank’, early next year and beyond. 

Teofimo Lopez

After dethroning Vasyl Lomachenko in a huge shock earlier this ear, Teofimo Lopez has become the lightweight division ruler and new pound-for-pound list entry. 

He’s also aa hugely popular combatant across the United States of America and a lightweight battle with Davis would present a mammoth PPV showdown. 

There are business and promotional elements in the way, though. With this one perhaps on hold until a later date when both men are at an even higher level of sporting fame. 

Devin Haney

Another lightweight title holder. Devin Haney has long been tipped to the new face of boxing. 

A former learner under Mayweather as well, that adds further tension to a possible clash with Davis in the near future. 

This a battle that would produce fireworks for sure but it could well be years before it ever materialises, unfortunately. 

Ryan Garcia

He may not hold a world title as of yet but Ryan Garcia is one of the most popular and rapidly rising fighters on the planet right now. 

Training alongside Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and boasting a huge online following, Garcia could be one of the next big things in the sport. 

He’s already called out Davis for a fight next year but that one looks unlikely of happening anytime soon. Watch this space. 

Gary Russell Jr. 

Probably the most likely option for ‘Tank’. Lesser named opponents are almost out of the question, now that his fights going forward will be broadcast live on PPV. 

He needs a dancing partner with a name and solid resume. Gary Russell Jr. possesses that and hails from D.C., which adds to the rivalry with Baltimore-native Davis. 

With Mayweather pushing Davis as the new top dog of the sport, this is a fight that come to fruition on Cinco de Mayo weekend next May on American soil.
