Much of this success comes from the already booming tourism industry of the state's Sin City.
Chances are that if you are coming to Vegas you want to experience the relaxed weed culture. However, before you set off on your trip there are some vital tips and tricks you should know about Las Vegas marijuana.
Read on to get the latest information to have fun and stay safe.
Road to Legalization
Even though it was legalized in 2001 for medicinal use, recreational weed in Las Vegas had to wait until January 2017 to open up dispensaries to the public.
Strong support came from the people of Nevada with over 59% supporting medical legalization in 1998. Then two years later, 65% showed up to vote finally implement the medicinal program.
Recreational pot also got a majority of electoral votes with 54% supporting the regulation and taxation of marijuana. Today, over 46 dispensaries are located throughout Vegas, catering to its residents and over 40 million visitors each year.
Who can Buy Weed?
Unlike medical marijuana where you need to be 18 years or older and possess a prescribed medical card, recreational cannabis is available to anyone 21 and over. All you need is a valid driver's license or ID from any state.
Each person is allowed to purchase up to 1 ounce of dry bud and 1/8 ounces of concentrates. Medical cardholders are allowed 2.5 ounces every 14 days for any type of cannabis.
Where Can You Smoke?
When you ask, "Is weed legal in Nevada?" you might think since you can buy it then you can smoke it anywhere. However, smoking in public is still prohibited.
This problem causes many tourists to use discrete methods of consumption, from vaping to eating edibles. Luckily, Las Vegas is in the process of legislation that will allow cannabis smoking lounges. One has already opened in October 2019 with more stuck in limbo as Congress sorts out the logistics.
While smoking lounges are the future, for now, you need to find a hotel that is 420-friendly, smoke at a friend's house, or indulge under the radar, especially when in the casinos. Staying in your room to smoke and play an online casino might be your safest option.
What About Growing Weed?
The Las Vegas marijuana laws for growing are much more strict than other states. That is because you have to live at least 25 miles from a dispensary to grow up to 6 personal plants.
This might not seem relevant for a visitor, but it is good to know if you want to move to Nevada.
How to Transport Cannabis
Weed in Vegas might be legal, however, driving with it has limitations. You must seal your weed in a sealed container and it must be away from anyone under the age of 18. If you are caught with open containers then a citation will be given.
You know that is weed legal in Las Vegas but it might not be in whichever state you are traveling next. Finish your product before embarking to your home or to another state.
