Chemin de Fer
Overview
Classic Baccarat was invented in 19th century France and shortly after it spawned several variants, including chemin de fer, which was originally played as a two-person game only. And this is often the case for classic baccarat whenever it is played online at casino sites. Although viewed as an antiquated version of baccarat, chemin de fer has, arguably, remained relevant due to being the preferred variant of James Bond.
Scores
Fundamentally, chemin de fer is played with a shoe of six decks of cards. The scoring is the same as classic baccarat in that face cards are 0, aces are 1, and 2 to 9 are the number shown. The aim is to win with a “natural” 8 or 9, with 9 being the better score. When adding the values, the left digit is removed (for example, 17 is scored as 7).
Drawing Cards
Two cards are drawn when initially scoring the hands. At this point, no further cards will be drawn if either the banker or the player has 8 or 9. If that does not happen, a 6 or 7 will be required to stand. A 5 will have the option to draw a card or stand, while 0 to 4 points will be forced to draw a card. One slight wrinkle occurs when the banker draws 5, which forces an automatic draw.
Changing Banker
The reason why chemin de fer hasn’t become a widely viable option at online casino sites is that this version requires the player to act as the banker. Consequently, this version is better suited to being played at real-world casinos. When acting as the banker, the user must signify the highest bet that they are willing to meet. It is then up to the opponent to decide their preferred wager. After beginning as a two-player game, chemin de fer can now be played by multiplier users.
