Online Casinos Licensed by Estonian Organisation of Remote Gambling
Online casinos are fully legal in Estonia, and an operator has to simply obtain a license to be able to operate in the country. Online casino gambling became legal in Estonia in 2010 for domestic companies, while it was made legal for international companies the next year. The reason Estonia decided to make online casinos legal was the 2008 economic crisis, which prompted the government to allow business to operate online casinos so that the state could tax these establishments and create revenue to stabilize the country.
About Estonian Organisation of Remote Gambling
Estonia passed the Gambling Act in 2009, which was meant to regulate all of the online gambling market. Initially, only domestic companies tried to obtain the license for online gambling, but soon afterwards, in 2011, the government opened up to international companies as well. Ever since then, a number of foreign companies have started online casinos that can operate in Estonia. Unlicensed online casinos will simply be blocked by the internet service providers, although this does not pertain to all forms of online gambling.
Estonian Organisation of Remote Gambling Licensed Online Casinos
In 2011, there were only eight licenses granted that allow online casinos to operate in Estonia. The 2009 Gambling Act requires online casinos to have games that fall into a certain category. This includes both online slots and table games. While land-based casinos must have a certain number of slot machines and table games, the number of these at online casinos is not stipulated precisely. Besides the eight fully licensed online casinos, there are over 800 gambling sites that are blacklisted by the government and ISPs.
Safety
In order to make gambling on the internet safe, the country has issued only several licenses to tested sites. Nearly all other sites have been blacklisted. The ISPs have been urged to block these sites in order to not get fined, which makes it safer for the citizens of Estonia.
