The Seychelles are the closest thing to a real paradise on Earth. The country is an archipelago that consists of over 115 islands, but it also has a gambling industry that is regulated by the Seychelles Gaming Authority.
Gambling at casinos in the Seychelles is both legal and fully regulated, as the country has specific laws in place to deal with this matter. Opening a gambling establishment in the Seychelles is simple. Gambling operators just have to obtain an operating license from the government’s main gambling regulating body, the Seychelles Gaming Authority, and then pay the annual fees. Currently there are only four land-based casinos present in the Seychelles. Online gambling is legal as well, and is regulated by the same authority, so all operators have to direct their efforts to the Seychelles Gamin Authority to obtain a valid operating license.
When the government of the Seychelles passed the Seychelles Gambling Act in 2014, it provided that the regulating body could issue operators three types of licenses: a casino license, a slot machine license, and an interactive gaming license, which concerns online casinos in particular. This provided a legal framework for operators to obtain the operating licenses for online casinos, as the previous 2003 Interactive Gambling Act was not sufficient enough to cover the subject entirely and oversee all matters concerning online gambling. Now, all operators can obtain the license from the Seychelles Gaming Authority, provided they pay appropriate licensing fees.
Currently there are several hundreds of online casinos that offer their full services to citizens in the Seychelles. These casinos have language options either in English, French or Seychellois-Creole, and accept a number of different currencies, along with Seychellois Rupees, so players do not have to pay steep conversion fees at some of these online casinos. However, despite the government and Seychelles Gaming Authority offering licenses to all operators that are willing to apply and pay the fees, there have been no permits issued so far. This means that there are currently no online casinos operating from the Seychelles, while there is a large number of international online operators that offer their services to the citizens of the Seychelles.
The Gambling Act prohibits citizens from the Seychelles from gambling at unlicensed online casinos in theory, but there is no information or reported cases on whether this is rigidly enforced or more of a suggestion. In practice, playing from the Seychelles is perfectly fine as far as legal considerations are concerned, but players need to apply standard precautions to find safe international casinos to play at.
Gambling in the Seychelles is legal at land-based casinos and online casinos that have a proper local operating license.
Legally, players from the Seychelles cannot gamble at unlicensed online casinos that operate outside the Seychelles. However, the government does not prosecute anyone for playing at foreign casinos.
Currently there are no online casinos based on the Seychelles, despite fairly lenient licensing conditions and requirements.
