Evolution Gaming Continues Expansion with €1 Million DigiWheel Acquisition
By Shane Addinall Sep 17, 2021 IndustryOnline casino industry giant Evolution Gaming continues its impressive growth and expansion with the acquisition of a product that you would not think they would need until you hear they just bought it.Evolution Gaming is certainly living up to its name. As a company that began in 2006 offering players access to the niche, if not dismissed, live dealer gambling category it has evolved into one the biggest names in online gambling today.
While most online casinos were focused on offering players the anonymity of playing online, safe from scrutiny behind a digital privacy screen, Evolution looked ahead to a time when online gambling would be an accepted pastime.
With licensing and regulation, online gambling left the shadows and became a mainstream form of entertainment and with it the demand for a live dealer experience in the comfort of our homes. A demand Evolution Gaming was ready and willing to deliver.
The Numbers Speak for Themselves
On their journey from relative obscurity to becoming a leading name in online casino entertainment Evolution has either acquired or partnered with several of the industry’s biggest names.
The most notable acquisitions came late in 2020 when they acquired the multi-award winning Online Slots developer NetEnt for €2 billion. The acquisition came as a massive surprise to the industry as up until that point it was NetEnt who had been the aggressor when it came to competitor acquisitions, having just snapped up casino developer Red Tiger in September 2019.
Not even four months later and Evolution Gaming were at it again this time acquiring the developers of industry-leading Megaways payline solution, Big Time Gaming. The deal was signed, sealed, and delivered for €450 million making the Evolution Group one of the most powerful and valuable in the entire iGaming industry.
The company then set its eyes on expanding its presence into the burgeoning US market where it has partnered with Wynn Resorts to help them bring their brand online via their newly formed Wynn Sports Interactive (WSI) division.
And On, And On, It Grows
With the focus that acquiring licensing the state-driven US market and the development of new online and mobile casino operations for its various partners, one would have assumed that Evolution Gaming would have its hands full for a while.
And that is exactly why we are taught not to assume. Evolution has just announced the acquisition of yet another company, DigiWheel, for the sum of €1 million:
Martin Carlesund, Evolution Group chief executive, said:
“We are always looking out for interesting technology and have been impressed by what DigiWheel have developed. DigiWheel is an excellent fit with Evolution’s product offering. We have had successes with wheel games and, of course, we are committed to creating the most immersive and exciting gaming experiences available in online casino.”
If you have never heard of DigiWheel don’t worry, neither had most of the online gambling industry up until this point. However, the nine-year-old company holds the accolade of developing the world’s first “360° Rotating HD Digital Gaming Wheel”.
By moving away from fixed traditional wheels for games like Dream Catcher, Crazy Time and many others, Evolution will be able to easily offer custom wheels to casinos, include interesting new features into existing games and get even more creative with future titles.
