Genius Sports is Now the Live Betting Partner for the Premier Lacrosse League
By Jeff Osienya May 13, 2020 IndustryPremier Lacrosse League ventures into live sports betting with Genius Sports in a bid to offer fans a more interactive experience. This partnership comes right before the return of the PLL Championship Series. On Tuesday, the PLL (Premier Lacrosse League) unveiled that it has appointed Genius Sports Group as its official sports betting Data and Integrity Partner. This is only a few months after the NLL (National Lacrosse League) announced the first professional lacrosse partnership with a betting company in January. The NLL signed a similar agreement with BetMGM, one of the most prominent sportsbook brands in the USA.
These lacrosse-sportsbook deals are an indicator that the lacrosse sport is poised to join the ranks of other popular USA sports leagues such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL in the betting industry.
What Does This Partnership Mean for PLL?
From this arrangement, Genius Sports will be powering a range of live betting PLL markets, to offer new content to sportsbooks in the USA and all over the world. The PLL had been pursuing the opportunity to start offering betting markets to its fans for a long time and finally, thanks to this partnership, the league can now enrich the in-game experience of its fans.
Sportsbooks will now start seamlessly receiving accurate data on all future PLL games starting from the upcoming PLL Championship Series to help expand the fanbase of the sport to a global audience. On top of that, the sports betting brand will also assist in protecting the PLL from any form of corruption related to betting via its well-respected advisory and educational services. The Genius Sports Group is currently also the principal partner of the FIBA, NCAA, NBA, NASCAR, LPGA Tours, PGA, and the English Premier in matters of integrity.
A Bright Future Ahead for the PLL
The PLL was Founded in October 2018 to compete with the National Lacrosse League, and Major League Lacrosse, which are both more established leagues. Even though the PLL is only in its second year, it’s already giving its counterparts in the sport a run for their money. The first season of the league premiered on 1st June 2019 with 7 teams and included a scheduled 14-week tour which took place in 12 major cities in the market.
Mike Rabil, the Co-Founder of the PLL expressed his enthusiasm after the league unveiled the partnership indicating that the experience for Lacrosse fans ‘just got better’. Likewise, Mark Locke, the CEO of the Genius Sports Group also said that through his company’s premium technology solutions for sports betting, the PLL would now be able to deliver the ‘ultimate digital fan experience’. Sports leagues often look at live betting as a means to boost fan engagement especially because we are in a time when traditional viewing of sports on TV is on a downward trend.
The PLL, like many other sports, had to delay its upcoming matches, which are now scheduled for 25th July to 9th August in a ripe viewership window which had initially been set for the Tokyo Olympics before the latter was postponed for an entire year. With the NBC being PLL’s broadcasting partner, the lacrosse league swooped in to seize the opportunity, now that the two-week tournament will be a quarantined event with no fans in the stadium like the Korean Football League.
