Rap Legend Eminem Launches NFT Art Project
By Shane Addinall Apr 30, 2021 IndustryLegendary rapper, Eminem is the latest celebrity to ride the wave of success in the NFT collectables marketplace, generating almost $1.8 million in sales of original music beats, digital cards, and rare physical items. The non-fungible token (NFT) market is currently booming. This virtual blockchain asset industry has become hot property among those who enjoy collecting rare items. Sports teams, pop brands, and celebrities have found the new trend invaluable for promoting their businesses and brands, and for selling special digital items associated with their fame.
The latest celebrity to benefit on the NFT bandwagon is Marshall Mathers, known professionally as ‘Eminem’. The celebrity rapper recently auctioned off some unique collectables in cahoots with the Nifty Gateway marketplace, generating a turnover of just shy of $1.8 million.
The “Shady Con” Success
The Real Slim Shady has been an avid partisan of a wide range of collectables, such as rap tapes, baseball cards, toys, and more since his childhood – a passion, he admits, has not died off with age. As such, the rapper felt that the NFT fad presented him with the perfect opportunity to produce something of his own worth collecting. He said:
“I’ve been collecting since I was a kid, everything from comic books to baseball cards to toys, as well as every rap album on cassette I could get my hands on. Not much has changed for me as an adult…I’ve attempted to re-create some of those collections from that time in my life, and I know I’m not alone. I wanted to give this drop the same vibe of, ‘Oh, man I gotta get just that one or maybe even the whole set!’ It’s been a lot of fun coming up with ideas from my own collecting passion.”
His auction, dubbed the “Shady Con” (con being short for convention) signified a digital festival where the platinum artist sold a collection of digital action figures (figures from iconic Eminem videos), an assortment of original instrumental beats, and other rare physical items.
The musical assortment comprised several tracks, selling for $313 each as an open collection. These musical marvels alone managed to earn the artist just over $741 000, after selling 2,368 individual mintings.
The physical items sold included Eminem X Carhartt Jordan 4’s shoes, a Film Strip Shadow Box signed by Eminem, and a rare vinyl print of Eminem’s “Infinite” album signed by the rapper.
A Payday Without Payback
The sale of NFTs provides musical artists and celebrities with the perfect channel to generate income without the interference of third-party promoters and studios. This way, the profits go where they ought to.
The NFT market provides some welcome relief coming off the tail end of a year where music artists felt the full-on impact of the COVID-19 pandemic when it shut down their shows and their ability to earn a living.
Slim Shady’s success story is only one of many reported tales over the last few months. Many celebs have earned well from such auctions, not to mention other prominent rappers too. Both Snoop Dog and Soulja Boy have raked the returns for trading digital assets.
