Spain Maintains Casino Shutdown Even As It Relaxes Public Gathering Restrictions
By Shane Addinall May 25, 2020 IndustryBrick ‘n Mortar casinos and gaming establishments in the private sector reel under their exclusion from the phase 2 approach to the re-opening of the economy and the relaxation of the Public gathering Decree. The global viral outbreak has had a marked impact on economies across the world, as many nations have been forced to lockdown over the past few months. Of course, no economy can be kept closed indefinitely, so it is no surprise that nations across Europe and further afield have started a progressive re-opening of the various markets. Unfortunately, the gambling market will have to wait a little while longer before it can resume trading in Spain.
Re-Introduction to Normality
Spain had one of the highest infection rates in Europe. Initially, and was one of the earliest countries to issue an entire lockdown on its economy (except for essential services). To the relief of many though, the state has started introducing a staged re-opening of the marketplace, for the resumption of trade and industry. Relief of the Public Gatherings Decree was published on May 9th (Order SND / 399/2020) for the phase 1 approach and May 16th (Order SND / 414/2020) for their phase 2 approach. These provided a detailed indication of what sectors of society could commence trading again.
As a result of the decrees, many industries are open for business, including the automotive industry, general retail industry, tech businesses, trade businesses, and more. Even public games concessions at the state level have been re-opened to the public, except for those located within shopping centres or commercial parks without direct and independent access to public roads
Casinos to Practice Patience
The latest decree has been expressly clear that these relaxations have no bearing on private land-based casino establishments where collective games of money and chance are operated, or where games rooms, arcades, tombola, or other premises where activities pertaining to this form of gaming are hosted. It is assumed that these public gathering facilities still pose much risk to the infection rate of the virus.
The state has made clear that the mention of such businesses in the private sector was not omitted from the latest gazette by mistake but have been purposely suspended from trading. The express time-frame for the re-opening of such markets will be made clear in future gazettes.
Online till Such Time
Gamblers will have to pass the time by with regulated online gambling for now, even though tough restrictions have been placed on operators limiting their marketing strategies and exposure in this sector as well. With any hope, the government will re-look at private-sector gaming merchants with the introduction of the next phase of relaxed gathering protocols.
