Sweden’s Record-Breaking Healthy Gaming Revenue Result
By Shane Addinall Sep 01, 2024 IndustryAn essential part of ensuring the sustainability and positive impact of licensed online gambling is keeping the community safe. Sweden's state-owned operator Svenska Spel celebrated achieving 93.2% of its revenue from low-risk players.Svenska Spel shared a positive press release celebrating the provider's success in increasing the revenue generated from what it classifies as ‘healthy’ gambling customers. The company has shown quarter-on-quarter incremental growth with a goal of achieving a perfect score in the near future.
93% Healthy Gaming Revenue
As one of the longest-standing gambling providers in Sweden, Svenska Spel is focused on providing world-class casino entertainment to customers while prioritising player safety.
Anna Johnson, president and CEO of Svenska Spel, said:
Quote“In the second quarter of 2024, Svenska Spel achieved a share of 93.2% of healthy revenue, which is an increase compared to the previous quarter (92.2%). The key figure indicates income from customers who gamble responsibly and with a low risk of problem gambling.”
One of the metrics the state-owned gambling provider uses to determine its progress regarding safer gambling is its ‘healthy gaming revenue’ percentage.
According to the announcements, the provider has been able to continually increase how much of its gaming income is derived from players who display little to no gambling addiction markers.
A quarter-on-quarter increase from 92.2% to 93.2% is a commendable accomplishment, considering that the company generated SEK 1.87 billion (€164.8 million) in casino revenues in the quarter in question.
How is ‘Healthy Gaming’ Tracked?
In response to a question about how the company tracks its social responsibility to the safety of Sweden’s gambling community, Johnson highlighted the importance of licensed casino operators.
As part of the country’s licensing agreement, providers of games of chance input player behaviour data into the risk analysis system Playscan. Players and the money they spend are categorised into various risk categories based on several factors, including “age, time and number of days played, short and long term losses and the frequency of deposits”.
They then cross-reference these data sets with the results of self-tests completed by tens of thousands of casino players to determine where individuals fall from low to high risk. The revenue is then split along these lines to determine how much comes from low-risk versus high-risk community members.
Responsible Gambling Focus
Not one to rest on its laurels, Johnson has clarified that the company is not satisfied with its new peak of 93.2% but continues to look for ways to claw that rate closer to 100%!
Johnson said:
Quote“Our reporting of healthy revenue shows that we have customers who play at high risk, which can be a sign of problem gambling. We want to reduce the risk in the gambling habits of these customers, as well as prevent customers who play with low-risk today from starting to play riskier tomorrow.”
She reiterated Svenska Spel’s focus on enhancing the country's responsible gambling tools and processes as key to increasing the healthy gaming revenue ratio and protecting the low-risk customer base from sliding into the high-risk category.
Once again, Johnson highlighted the need for all Swedish licensees to share the safer gambling data and risk analysis information they have in-house, as it will provide invaluable insights into the true state of the market.
