Your Bets Are Helping Charities Around The World!
By Shane Addinall Jun 17, 2019 IndustryDid you know that iGaming companies around the world are doing good with the bets you place? Children With Cancer, Trees For The Future and even the Save The Rhinos have received a helping hand thanks to you!As much as online gambling is to be viewed as 'for entertainment only' there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that, much like most entertainment verticals, it is a very wealthy industry.
As the world has become more aware of social values and corporate responsibility, there has been an increased interest in what these titans of industry are doing with the wealth they generate.
It is in the light of this conversation that more businesses are bringing their charitable donations and programs to the fore to show their patrons some of the good that is being done.
Ladbrokes Support Children With Cancer Charity
GVC Holdings, a powerhouse in the world of online gambling and sports betting, has really stepped up in 2019 to support the safety and security of gamblers with a call for tougher advertising standards in the UK and their dual investments in the Children With Cancer charity.
The Children With Cancer charity focuses their skills and funding to the goal of fighting the good fight against childhood cancer. Their online statement says it all:
“Ringing the End of Treatment Bell means a child has finished their cancer treatment. We fund vital research so that one day every child will survive and can ring the End of Treatment Bell.”
The good people at Children With Cancer face some heart-breaking realities each day however their burden will be lightened by Ladbrokes who signed on this month to become their charity partner till 2022. Ladbrokes will support the charity through fundraising events and activities to allow the charity to focus their attention on the children.
This news comes hot on the heels of Ladbrokes sister company, BETDAQ, announcing that they will be donating their shirt sponsorship of Sunderland AFC to the same charity. This will see the Children With Cancer logo prominently displayed on the football teams shirts for the duration of the 2-year agreement with BETDAQ!
GVC is also active in the Responsible Gambling arena with their provision of funding for the Safer Online Gambling Group (SOGG), a new safe-gambling non-profit, their push for stricter gambling advertising controls and their use of the billboards around Scottish football pitches to advertise responsible gambling rather than their own brands.
BBIN Dig Deep To Plant Trees For The Future
Altruism isn’t limited to casino providers looking to establish themselves in regulated markets like the UK. BBIN, a leading iGaming software provider in Asia, has been working to support global charitable organisations since 2018 through The Gaming Beat Charity (TGB Charity).
2019 has seen them focus on their “4 The Next” program which is focused on leaving behind a safer and greener world for our children and grandchildren through the planting of trees. The process is a simple one, visit their charity site, select a casino-themed tree to plant and where in the world you’d want to plant it. That’s it.
BBIN has committed to planting as many trees as are recorded in this very public ledger which at the time of writing sits at a fantastic 256,027 trees.
They are running this program through a partnership with the well-established and recognised Trees For The Future foundation which was first established in the 1989 and has subsequently planted over 115 million trees worldwide and revitalising the soil to allow the local population a second chance at life!
Microgaming’s Community Responsibility
Microgaming is one of the founders of the online gambling world as we know it today and have been known to support various charities and activities over the years. With their roots in South Africa, it came as no surprise when they raised funds for the Save The Rhino organisation which works tirelessly to save these magnificent animals from extinction.
However, this is only a single aspect of a much larger charitable program known as PlayItForward which donated to The Women’s Refuge, Teenage Cancer Trust and Doctors Without Borders in the same year.
More specifically since Microgaming established itself on the Isle of Man PlayItForward has been focused on providing funding and on the ground support for initiatives that will benefit the people of the region. As their website says:
“The initiative serves as an outlet for social good on the island, most notably in the areas of health, charity, education and sport.”
Some practical examples of these social good programs include updating and populating local libraries, upgrading public playgrounds, donating medical equipment to local hospitals and ensuring populated centers around the Isle of Man have automated external defibrillators (AED's) on hand.
Regulation Works For You
It is important to mention one of the most vital aspects of local gambling regulation - the promotion, funding and oversight of Responsible Gambling initiatives.
All regulated regions have a contractual obligation in their licencing agreements that sees the licence holder funding the training and support of safe gambling programs.
In many cases, this amounts to 1% of annual revenue per company seeking a licence in the respective territory and goes to ensure that those with compulsive gambling can receive the support they need and that children are protected from underage gambling.
The Silver Lining
People will always be drawn to the excitement and entertainment of online gambling, however it is good to know that some of the funds from our hobby will make its way back into the community and the planet to make life a little better for those who need it!
