Denmark Set to Blacklist 55 Online Gambling Sites
By Shane Addinall Mar 24, 2021 LegalityDanish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, increases the pressure on illegal gambling sites announcing a record high block list, as it seeks to support licensed casinos and increase its ability to deliver on its safer gambling objectives. One of the most proactive, fair, and consistent gambling regulators is the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden. Denmark was one of the earlier adopters of gambling liberalisation having opened its doors to online casinos and betting operations in 2012.
Unlike other regulators who enforce knee jerk reactions to small sets of data Spillemyndigheden is known for running through research projects and collaborating with on the ground experts to create programs that serve the players, the government, and the gambling industry.
This has led to the ongoing success of the regulator in combating gambling addiction in youth and at-risk residents, with much of this success being attributed to ‘StopSpillet’, a free resource centre aimed at educating gamblers and their loved ones on gambling addiction, and ‘ROFUS’ a nationwide register of excluded players which all licenced casinos must participate in.
Short Leash for Illegal Operators
With such a fair and reasonable gambling regulatory framework it goes without saying that Denmark attracts the best and most reputable online casinos and betting operators – yet despite this, there are many sites that continue to target the country illegally.
In response to the continued encroachment of these illegal sites Anders Dorph, Spillemyndigheden Director, said:
“One of our most important tasks is to protect players from illegal gambling, at the same time, we must ensure that the providers who are licensed to offer games in Denmark can run their business under orderly conditions.”
As a man of action and not just words Spillemyndigheden has obtained court approval to block an additional 55 illegal gambling sites. These sites have all refused to comply with requests by the Danish Gaming Authority to cease targeting Danes pushing Dorph and his team to take legal action.
Leaning into Safer Gambling
This is not the first time Spillemyndigheden has issued notice on illegal gambling sites, yet it is by far their largest single action to date.
Dorph responded to the increased numbers saying:
“The record-high number clearly shows that there is a need for the targeted effort, and we will therefore maintain the increased focus in the future.”
Before this, the Gaming Authority blocked between 12 and 25 illegal sites at a time. With this latest court case, the message is clear – the Danish Gaming Authority is not going to allow their current success to blind them to the danger that unlicensed gambling sites represent to their safer gambling efforts.
With Danish gambling revenues reaching nearly €1 billion per annum and an operator-friendly regulatory and taxation framework there is no reason for gambling sites not to apply for a licence in Denmark.
