Germany Greenlights Online Casino Games!
By Shane Addinall Sep 18, 2020 LegalityGerman online casino fans are gearing up for the new gambling regulation which will come into force mid-2021. We look at the new gambling authority, its stance on protecting its mandates and what restrictions are currently in place.Gambling in Germany is a trickier beast than one might realise. Historically there was a great divide between slots fans and the more highly thought of table games aficionados. This divide was even reflected in their respective venues, with suited patrons standing around roulette wheels and blackjack tables in plush venues, and slot lovers relegated to locations more akin to a 90s arcade.
Germany Goes Digital
With the advent of online casinos and the industry move to more slot centric offerings, both in new game development and casino bonuses, this sentiment began to sway, and slots began to receive the appreciation they deserved.
However, German regulators were not too keen on the idea of allowing these online casino upstarts a place in their market. That was until the early part of 2020 when Germany finally approved a new gambling regulation that would legalise online casino and online poker.
The Glücksspielneuregulierungstaatsvertrag (GlüNeuRStv) bill allowed for the establishment on an official German regulatory body in Sachsen-Anhalt which will oversee all online gambling-related laws and create the framework for international operators to do business within the country.
Casino Games Are Ready to Roll
The newly approved casino gambling regulation will come into play 1 July 2021 and will see German casino fans legally able to access such amazing and jackpot ladened games as Microgaming Mega Moolah series and Red Tiger’s Gonzo Quest Megaways, not mention the thousands of back catalogue games offered by the likes of Yggdrasil, Thunderkick, NetEnt et al.
While the market will be open to licensed casinos the regulator promises to be one of the more hands-on bodies, akin to the MGA, UKGC and Swedish Gambling Authority, where player protection and financial controls are their primary concern.
To this end they have published the following guidelines for addiction prevention:
- Slots: all spins are limited to a maximum cost of €1
- Table Games: for the interim, there will be no online blackjack or roulette tables
- Banking: maximum monthly deposits are limited to €1000
They have also made it abundantly clear that the income potential of licencing will not stay their hand when it comes to dealing with transgressors of their mandates. Any licenced casino breaching any of the above guidelines will immediately forfeit their licence and potentially face a permanent blacklisting.
