Australian Online Gambling Sees Unprecedented 67% Spike
By Shane Addinall Apr 13, 2020 OpinionGambling has seen a seemingly meteoric increase in Australia of late. However, a key metric is whether or not the growth of the online casino sector is out of sync with other online industries?Based on the analytical data gathered by AlphaBet and the financial insights garnered by the credit firm Illion it appears as though recent Australian gambling has seen a meteoric 67% increase, with most of that coming from the online gambling sector.
Monash University Associate Professor Charles Livingstone said:
"They’re (slot machines) tapping straight into the pleasure genre of your brain. People who are under stress find that very liberating - It’s difficult to imagine a slightly more stressful situation than we’ve got at the moment for many people.”
Professor Livingstone did express concern that if unchecked this rampant spike in online gambling could put at-risk individuals firmly in the path of gambling addiction.
Growth In Context
While growth in excess of 60% in online gambling is unprecedented for the industry it is not however out of line with the growth Australia has seen in other non-gambling online businesses.
Online food delivery services and online retail markets have both experienced growth spurts of 61% and 63% respectively. While it is true that at-risk gamblers might be more susceptible due to the stresses, they’re experiencing the market in general simply seems to be moving with the tide as the ability to visit a local casino has become a non-option.
Dr Charles Livingstone did comment on the situation agreeing that much of the online movement could be tracked to gamblers trying online casino games for the first time, and new players looking for a hobby to keep themselves entertained during their time at home.
