Huge December boxing line-up
By Glen James Dec 10, 2020 OpinionGamblersPick looks ahead to the best December fights coming up in boxing as the year finishes off in style. It’s been a turbulent and unprecedented year for boxing but the sport will finish off in a strong position throughout December.
Many of the stars biggest names are set to enter the ring this month and aim to see out 2020 successfully.
With a more prosperous 2021 on the horizon and some of the sport’s most anticipated match-ups potentially set to take place, no slip ups can be afforded at this crucial stage.
So, here are some of the best upcoming December fights for fans to look forward to at the end of this year.
Anthony Joshua vs. Kubrat Pulev (December 12th)
Unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will return to the ring on December 12th aiming to defend his WBA ‘Super’, IBF and WBO titles against latest Kubrat Pulev.
The reigning champion reclaimed his belts in a rematch victory over maiden conqueror Andy Ruiz Jr. last December. ‘AJ’ put on a much more disciplined performance in the reverse clash with the Mexican-American, running a comfortable unanimous decision victor in Saudi Arabia.
Joshua had previously been stopped inside seven rounds by Ruiz Jr., in what was one of the most stunning upsets in recent times. But he’s back on track in his career and could potentially set up an undisputed heavyweight showdown with fellow countryman Tyson Fury next year.
That’s if he can overcome the dangerous challenge of Pulev this month in London. At the O2 Arena he will take to proceedings in hope of securing another big knockout victory to tee-up a promising New Year.
Gennadiy Golovkin vs. Kamil Szeremeta (December 18th)
IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin will defend his crown against Kamil Szeremeta on December 18th, with a third and final clash with long-standing rival Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on the horizon.
The Kazakh fighter has bounced back from his first ever career defeat at the hands of Canelo with two straight victories over Steve Rolls and Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
It was in the latter unanimous decision triumph that he regained a middleweight crown, winning the IBF belt in a hard fought battle with the Ukrainian contender.
Next up is a meeting with Szeremeta, but a highly anticipated trilogy showdown with rival Canelo looks to be on the cards for some stage in 2021 once fans are once again permitted in venues.
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Callum Smith (December 19th)
Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has undoubtedly become the face of boxing. Despite his previous legal battles with former promotional stable Golden Boy, he has come through on top.
It looked like he would have to sit out the year due to those outside of the ring problems but he has finally got a fight date and will next tackle Callum Smith on December 19th.
The pound-for-pound star will look to dethrone the defending WBA and Ring Magazine super-middleweight champion when the pair collide Texas just before Christmas.
It would be another impressive feat to add to Canelo’s ever-growing legacy, as he continues to shine brightest among his peers.
