Will Sports Betting and Online Gambling Save the Oscars?
By Shane Addinall Feb 22, 2019 OpinionThe Oscars 2019 are upon us and the online gambling world is set to place bets on who will walk away as winners. But is it too little too late? Will the general public once again pay attention to the Oscars? It remains to be seen. The 91st Academy Awards is here and while movie stars prepare their outfits and practice their acceptance speeches, the online gambling world has another idea on how to prepare.
Once a shining star of glamour and prestige, the Oscars have fallen in grace in recent years with less and less effort being put into the awards ceremony by organisers.
In fact, the 2019 ceremony (taking place on the 24th of February 2019) is already shaping up to be fairly underwhelming as they have failed to even secure a host for the evening.
The Kevin Hart Controversy
Only days after being announced that actor Kevin Hart would be the host for the Oscars, a flurry of homophobic Tweets surfaced forcing the comedian to step down from his role.
Hart Tweeted saying: “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars. This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists."
Hart has since apologised for his past Tweets but is still staying off of the stage at this year’s Oscar Awards Ceremony.
The lack of host will be the first time in 30 years that the evening will proceed without an actor taking the lead and it remains to be seen what sort of impact it will have on the proceedings.
Lack of Oscar Interest
The mention of Kevin Hart and his controversy has been some of the only chatter about the Oscars this year as many fans feel that it simply isn’t worth watching.
Created to celebrate the previous year’s films, actors and all those who work tirelessly behind the scenes, it appears that the focus has shifted to simply making money.
While fans may be disappointed, the online sports betting world is sitting up and paying attention to the Oscars. Placing bets on who could walk away a winner and in turn potentially claiming a large pay out, are all exciting opportunities for those in the know.
Sportsbooks and the Oscars
It remains a fact that ratings for the Oscars has dropped dramatically in recent years, but in 2019, things may a be a little different.
One of the largest sports betting industries in the world, found in New Jersey, has received the green light to finally place bets on the Oscars!
But around the world, other sportsbooks are paying close attention to the night’s nominees too!
Bwin, a popular online sportsbook based in the UK, has released their set of possible betting options. For those who place strategic bets, the outcomes could be huge.
It’s because of this shift in focus surrounding the Oscars that it could be a large boost for ratings for the show. Will players be watching simply to see whether or not their bets will pay off? Will it be a large enough boost to ratings to make a dent in the previous years’ dips? While only time will tell, sports betting could be the saving grace that the Oscars needed all along.
Betting with Bwin
If you were to visit Bwin Sports Betting site right now, you’d find a number of different Oscar categories waiting to be bet on.
These categories include Best Motion Picture where Roma is favoured to win, Best Actor featuring Rami Malek as the top contender for his portrayal in Bohemian Rhapsody, and Best Animated Feature Film where Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is shining brightly.
There are many other favourites to place your bets on too, with each providing exciting opportunities to win.
If you’re new to sports betting in this context, there are a few simple rules to remember.
✓ 1. Higher odds are represented by lower numbers and vice versa. This is also known as decimal betting.
✓ 2. The higher the odds, the more chance there is of your choice being the winner.
✓ 3. The lower the odds, the higher the risk, and the greater your reward could be.
For instance, if you place a €100 bet on Roma to win Best Motion Picture, you stand the chance to be rewarded a cool €157. If you choose to back the underdog and place the same bet on Vice, you could receive a massive €15,100 instead!
You may be tempted to place all of your bets on the underdogs, simply for the chance to win huge cash prizes, but remember to do your research and ensure that you understand the market.
Whether you’ll be watching the Oscars unfold in real time on the 24th of February 2019 or not, always be sure to play responsibly!
