Blockchain based intergalactic settlement game, Alien Worlds, raises millions in funding selling in-game assets and its own cryptocurrency. Is this the beginning of a new wave of digital money and online entertainment?
It is heartening to see that blockchain technology is beginning to find broader adoption rather than simply being seen as the platform for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The technology’s inherent speed, security and provability gained the attention of several niche industries including online gambling, the collectables and art market and gaming. Each of these verticals has been accelerating the development of decentralised applications (dApps) which serve the specific needs of their users.
This development curve has seen the launch of Bitcoin casinos, helped artists sell digital artworks for millions of Euros and helped the game Alien Worlds raise more than $2 million without having to resort to a Kickstarter or Indiegogo funding campaign.
The Rise of NFTs
Just over a week ago, we covered the auction of an artwork entitled “Everydays — The First 5000 Days” for the mind-blowing sum of $69.3 million. While paintings have sold for much more over the years what made this auction so special is that the artwork in question is fully digital.
The artist Beeple created a jpeg collage comprising 5000 images, this artwork was hosted on the blockchain and associated with a non-fungible token (NFT). Given that an NFT cannot be duplicated or faked now allows for the owner of “Everydays — The First 5000 Days” to be able to prove they have the original and to be able to transfer that ownership to another party.
For the first time ever, it is now possible to prove ownership of an original digital work which has had a major impact specifically on the trading card industry and the art world where this provability has historically been a hindrance.
A Bold New Decentralised Metaverse
Building on this unique new ability to track digital assets and assign them value based on demand and rarity the free to play game, Alien Worlds, raised more than $2 million in funding via the sale of NFT packs and its in-house cryptocurrency Trilium (TLM).
The game itself is an interesting reflection of modern society and its obsession with decentralisation and self-governance. The more you live in the world and engage in activities that range from actively mining for Trilium to waging war on other planets the more TLM cryptocurrency you can earn.
Co-founder of Alien Worlds, Saro McKenna, said:
“We welcome thousands of new unique players per week from all over the world, who love competing with each other to select the best NFT mining rig, watch their Trilium reserves grow and take over richer Planets.”
While the goal is to accumulate wealth in the form of Trilium, it is these NFT packs that empower your personal empire and determine how much value you add to your planet’s overall status in the metaverse. These NFT packs contain land (needed to mine TLM), tools (add boosts such as increased mining speed), minions (your defenders in a war or skirmish) and weapons (add to your overall defence and attack power).
The developers have also announced that they will be adding terraforming to the game soon. This will allow landowners to build locations of interest which can, in turn, attracts visitors – this could include social clubs, shopping malls and perhaps even online casinos.
What could be more relaxing after a day of intergalactic intrigue and Trilium mining than sitting down to a few hands of blackjack or spinning a few slot reels on your favourite vacation planet?
