Opera Integrates Direct Support for NFT Crypto Domains
By Shane Addinall May 04, 2021 TechnologyOpera, the blockchain-friendly web browser, announced its partnership with Unstoppable Domains to allow users streamlined access to .crypto domains, making it the first major browser to support non-traditional (DNS) domain names without 3rd party apps.As a relative newcomer to the web browser space Opera has always been a company to watch when it comes to adopting new technology and offering users fresh new content.
This was certainly the case back in 2019 when they partnered with blockchain-based domain host Unstoppable Domains to offer Opera Wallet users the chance to claim a free .crypto domain and even threw in a randomly generated Haiku to sweeten the deal.
Shaking Up the Industry
Since its relatively uneventful launch as “that mobile browser” Opera has really found an appreciative audience amongst users who are tired of ad bloated browsers which suffer from memory leaks and a myriad of other technical issues.
To date, the company has managed to secure just over 2% of the market with more than 320 million active users securing it the number six position in terms of global browser popularity.
They are particularly proud of their blockchain integration as it allows their fans to:
- Access Web 3 and use a Crypto Wallet directly from the browser (Android, iOS, desktop).
- Make easy crypto top-ups directly in the browser (buy BTC, ETH and TRX).
- Send crypto-like cash through the internet.
- Access Opera’s dApp store with curated content.
This is clearly just the beginning for the blockchain-friendly web browser as they have announced that they will be taking their relationship with Unstoppable Domains to the next level.
The Key to My Website
Helping users claim a free Haiku and adding on a bonus .crypto domain at the same time was a clever gimmick, however, the two companies are now working hand-in-hand to ensure that users can access decentralised websites without the need to install third party applications such as browser extensions.
Matthew Gould, CEO at Unstoppable Domains, said:
“Unstoppable Domains' expansion of decentralized websites to all Opera Browser platforms gives more people a simple way to own high-functionality NFT domains and access the decentralized web. These domains simplify the process of transacting with a .crypto wallet, eliminating the need to remember a lengthy wallet address.”
In addition to these Opera users now being able to create blockchain-based websites and access existing blockchain-based domains as easily as one would a traditional website these domains also fall into the realm of NFTs (non-fungible tokens).
Opera Product Director, Maciej Kocemba, said:
“We have always supported web innovation, and the decentralized web or Web3 is the natural next wave. Registering your .crypto domain, which is forever yours, is a great first step into Web3. It also gives people a chance to own an NFT.”
Each of these .crypto domains can be sold as an asset as was seen with win.crypto, gambling.crypto, and hotels.crypto selling in March 2021 for $100,000 per domain. While the .com bubble may have come and gone there is a lot of potential for finding and securing that important business or project domain using a .crypto extension.
