PGA Tour and the Action Network Announce the Launch of Golfbet
By Jeff Osienya Mar 04, 2020 TechnologyAfter the PASPA was scrapped off by the SCOTUS, PGA Tour releases the first approved platform for betting content of professional golf, powered by The Action Network. On Monday, the PGA Tour announced their plan to unveil GolfBet, a flagship golf betting platform in an affiliate partnership with a sports betting media company known as The Action Network. This pioneer golf betting site is aimed at boosting the popularity of golf as one of the most gambling-friendly sports across the USA.
Apart from content distribution through PGA Tour digital platforms, the new partnership comes complete with video footage and official TOUR data rights for supporting the GolfBet content. When GolfBet goes live, the betting content platform will be exclusively hosted in The Action Network’s website. On top of that, they will also push the golf betting site on mobile through The Action Network mobile application to target mobile device players. However, as we speak, the said web URL links to a news section that solely discuses the latest on golf.
After PGA Tour made the announcement, Norb Gambuzza, the organization’s Senior Vice President of Media and Gaming affirmed that this was a much-needed betting content product that would cater to golf enthusiasts nationwide. From Norb’s statement, before GolfBet, golf fans and other sports bettors had been yearning for a platform that would offer comprehensive coverage of the sport. He also added that partnering with The Action Network was a no-brainer as it would double up as an information center full of insight that would encourage fans to bet more responsibly on the game.
This Sports Betting Move Wasn’t a First for PGA Tour
If we look back at the history of the PGA Tour, this is not their first attempt to explore the sports gambling industry. Two years ago (2018), TOUR unveiled an integrity program, in collaboration with Genius Sports. Their agenda was to protect the golf players in their tournaments from external gambling-related influences that would lead to corruption.
That same year, they also announced another partnership with IMG ARENA for the distribution of official PGA Tour golf data for usage in the media and golf betting. Additionally, in August 2018, PGA Tour formed a partnership with DraftKings, a daily fantasy sports giant to offer fantasy sports betting opportunities on golf, under PGA Tour DraftKings Fantasy Golf.
The move to collaborate and create such a platform is one of the newest trends in sports betting. Of late, sports leagues across the USA have been drawing closer to the sports gambling industry after the US Supreme Court repealed out the PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) back in 2018.
While it still isn’t clear what the golf betting platform will look like, the partners made a strong statement saying that GolfBet will be free for the coming future, and they aim to expand the platform across the globe. From the look of things, it appears that there’s a bright future for golf betting perhaps to the scales that sports like football currently enjoy.
