Protect Your Casino Accounts as Hackers Attack Gambling Operators
By Shane Addinall Nov 11, 2023 TechnologyCloudflare has revealed that online casinos were about the top 3 targets for DDoS attacks by hackers in 2023. It’s important to keep your casino account and internet browsing as safe as possible. Here’s how.For as long as the internet has been around, hackers and scammers have tried their luck at getting access to everyday user’s accounts. Whether to commit fraud, steal money, or get their hands on personal information, hackers are a problem that affect every industry.
Up until recently, online casinos were relatively safe from DDoS attacks, but it appears that is no longer the case. Recently, the number of attacks by hackers on casino sites has increased exponentially.
More DDoS Attacks That Ever Before
Throughout 2023, major online casinos have experienced more cybersecurity attacks than they have in previous years. Stake.com suffered one of the largest attacks, with millions in crypto being stolen. More MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment also experienced hacks which required paying ransoms and shutting down important systems.
With companies like these being targeted, it’s no surprise that Cloudflare revealed a massive jump in cyberattacks in Q3 of 2023.
The number of DDoS attack requests stopped by Cloudflare jumped from 5.4 trillion in Q2 to 8.9 trillion in Q3. That’s a staggering 65% increase in attacks across the board. Of those 8.9 trillion, online gambling sites made up 5% - that’s 445 billion.
The cyber company also revealed that thanks to bot technology, hackers are able to launch more attacks per minute than ever before. Approximately 36% of these attacks were launched from the US, with Germany and the UK following close behind them.
4 Ways To Protect Your Online Casino Account
If you want to make sure that your online gambling experience is secure, use these tips and enjoy total peace of mind as you wager.
✓ 1. Choose a Very Secure Password
When choosing a password for your casino account, you may be tempted to use your birthday or pet’s name, but those are some of the most obvious (and hackable) passwords used by many. To ensure that your account is as secure as possible, choose a complex password that no one could guess.
✓ 2. Use 2-Factor Verification
If the casino you’re visiting offers 2-step authentication, it’s always a good idea to activate it. This means you’ll need to either receive a text/email or use an app like Google Authenticator to activate your account.
✓ 3. Never Play on Public Wifi
Public wifi connections, like those available at malls or airports, are not as secure as your connection is at home. In fact, they are so widely used that hackers make a point of checking these connections as an easy way of accessing personal information. Banks also advise against using public wifi when accessing your account, which proves that it’s not safe.
✓ 4. Use a VPN
If your favourite online casino supports VPN browsing, it’s a smart idea to activate it when playing. VPNs help you secure your line and provide an extra layer of protection between you and those attempting to get access to your account.
Use these simple tips to your advantage and ensure that your playing time is always as secure as possible while enjoying what online gambling sites have to offer.
