UK Tech Sector Looks to Gambling Industry for Growth
By Shane Addinall Jun 07, 2022 TechnologyThe gambling industry plans to level up the UK technology sector by creating 15,000 new job opportunities and investing £20 million in training programs. In recent memory, the UK gambling sector has been in the media primarily for concerns over its inelegant approach to gambling regulation, despite the industry being both nuanced and a significant source of revenue.
However, when it comes to cutting edge technology, the online casino and betting sectors have always been early adopters. This open arms approach to emerging tech has seen massive advancements in mobile gambling software, incredible growth in the live dealer gambling market, and successfully implemented blockchain gaming and cryptocurrency transacting.
On the flip side, some technology hasn't gone anywhere, such as Microgaming's ill-fated smartwatch casino games in 2015. There are other tech advancements, such as augmented reality and virtual reality, which we are still waiting to see if they will bear any fruits.
Essential UK Job Creation Partner
Regardless of whether a new technology proves to be a breakout success or fizzles into obscurity, the fact remains that the gambling sector is a hotbed for talent developments and innovation.
This fact has been highlighted in the United Kingdom thanks to the country's Purpose Coalition report. The Purpose Coalition comprises several of the region's leading drivers in business, training, and innovation, including the BBC, Amazon, NHS Trusts, UK councils and universities.
Lord Walney, Chair of the Purpose Business Coalition, said:
"This analysis highlights the positive economic and social contribution made by members of the Betting and Gaming Council who are sustaining well paid high-tech jobs in several communities that focus on the government's levelling up drive.”
This rep comes off the back of the gambling sector employing more than 10,000 people in high skilled technology jobs. Overall, the industry has created nearly 120,000 jobs and generates approximately £4.5 billion in tax-based revenue.
Levelling Up the United Kingdom
The Purpose Coalition is aggressively driving its goals of Levelling Up the UK job market by partnering with various bodies, including the Betting and Gaming Council.
Chief Executive of the Betting and Gaming Council Michael Dugher said:
“Our members are global leaders in the betting and gaming industry, with the online betting, gaming, and bingo sector now on track to deliver another 15,000 high paid, high skilled jobs. The only thing that risks that growth will be poorly conceived regulations that hamper business and threaten jobs.”
In addition to the promise of an additional 15,000 new jobs in the technology sector, the BGC has outlined its plans to invest £20 million in training and development, resulting in more than 5000 gambling industry apprenticeships by 2025.
