Denmark has shored up its safer gambling program by installing a new licensing requirement for casino software providers. This will ensure that not only will casinos be trustworthy but also the individual games they host.
The government has installed a new gaming license in a promising development for licensed and regulated online gambling in Denmark. The license is not directed at the casino and gambling venues but at the developers who create and maintain the games of chance played at these sites.
Casino Software Provider Licensing Requirement
The Danish Gambling Authority (DGA) passed an amendment to its Gambling Act requiring casino software providers to be licensed in Denmark.
Currently, while online casinos need to be licensed, they have no control over the data security, game structure, payout controls, and other mechanisms of the games they provide on their platforms.
The new ruling requires content providers to submit their games and systems audits and inspections by accredited third parties to ensure that they offer fair payouts, pose no risks of data leaks or security breaches, and adhere to the requirements of the Danish “Game Suppliers” guidelines.
The DGA has outlined the tests and formalised them into a certification program. All games of chance offered at licensed Danish online casinos must be approved, and their developer must hold the relevant certificate.
Licensed applications officially begin on 1 September 2024, and the licensing requirement will officially come into force on 1 January 2025.

This announcement has been met with questions surrounding its intent. While there is a financial component to any licensing fee, it is not the driving force behind the requirement; instead, it is being directed by a desire to ensure player safety.
