Overview

Åland Islands are an autonomous region in Finland, with the Åland Gambling Authority, having a free reign to regulate their online casinos. In 1966, the Government set up the company called ÅlandsPenningautomatförening, more commonly known as PAF, and since then, it has been the only gaming operator licensed by the Åland Gambling Authority, maintaining a legal monopoly in the region.

Online Casinos Licensed by the Åland Gambling Authority

There is currently just one online casino licensed by the Åland Gambling Authority, already mentioned ÅlandsPenningautomatförening or PAF. This company offers online as well as land-based gambling for all the residents and visitors, and no other online casinos have or can apply to be licensed by the Åland Government.

About Online Casinos Licensed by the Åland Gambling Authority

Since the situation in the Åland Islands is that of monopoly, no online casinos can apply to be licensed by the Åland Gambling Authority. PAF is the only operator that needs to adhere to the standards set forth by the Government and, since there is no competition, a chance of their license ever being revoked is practically non-existent.

However, PAF does have to undergo regular checkups by independent auditing bodies such as eCogra, which make sure their games are fair and in line with what’s being advertised. Furthermore, the company has to give up a large part of its proceeds towards charitable causes according to their license agreement.

Online Casinos Licensed by the Åland Gambling Authority Licensed Online Casinos

The Åland Gambling Authority online casinos are restricted to a single operator for the time being. Whether this will change in the future remains to be seen, as there is a strong push from Europe to abolish all types of monopoly behavior and create a proper free market. Until that changes, PAF remains the only Åland Government licensed online casino.

Safety

Despite there being an online gambling monopoly in Åland Islands, players can expect a very high level of safety when playing at PAF, with every complaint being taken very seriously by the Government. Regulators look into all the player allegations and handle them accordingly, not allowing PAF to become too comfortable in their position.

Hence,  the Åland Gambling Authority gambling regulation represents a good example of how even monopoly-based markets can still be kept fair and safe, without giving too much free reign to the licensed operator(s).

FAQ

For the time being, just one. PAF is the only online casino regulated by the Åland Gambling Authority.

Yes, it is safe. Although PAF has a monopoly in the region, they are still required to adhere to very strict regulations, and any players’ complaints are taken very seriously and handled appropriately.
