Insightful Spillemyndigheden Report Proves Danes Love Online Casinos
By Shane Addinall Dec 19, 2022 IndustryJoin us as we delve into the recent overview of the Danish gambling market, which Spillemyndigheden released. We look at where Danish players spend their money to track the recent changes in gambling preferences. As part of their ongoing marketing monitoring and analysis of gambling spending in Denmark, the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) publishes quarterly statistics. The report looks at the region's gross gaming revenue (GGR) by month and tracks back to January 2012.
Understanding The Gambling Segments
The DGA publication splits the country’s gambling sector into four divisions: online casinos, online betting, land-based casinos, and gaming machines. While the first three segments will be instantly recognisable, the fourth might not be.
Across many parts of Europe, it is common to find arcades, gaming halls, bars and restaurants offering real money games of chance. The same is true in Denmark, and the income from these venues is captured under the ”Gaming Machines” heading.
The accuracy of the supplied data is also critical, as operators looking to avoid taxes and other liabilities might be tempted to skew their numbers. However, rather than requesting that the operator sends the DGA separate recons, they draw their reports directly from the taxes and duties submitted by licensed gambling operators to the Danish Tax Agency.
Online Gambling Shines in Denmark
While the official report provides a fantastic month-by-month overview of gambling spending in Denmark, we totalled the GGR figures as far back as 2012 to understand market preferences and its changing behaviours:
It is clear from the data provided by Spillemyndigheden that Danish gamblers prefer to spend their time playing Online Slots, video poker and blackjack rather than visiting a land-based casino or evening spending time at a gaming hall. What we found most interesting is how this change in gambling behaviour has impacted the local betting market.
Online Casino Surpasses Online Betting
The closest competitor in the online space is betting, and even here, it is essential to understand the history of online gambling in Denmark. The market was heavily dominated by betting, but thanks to a combination of lockdowns, high mobile penetration, and high-speed internet access, the local preference has swung towards online gambling.
Cumulative GGR 2012-2019:
- Betting: DKK 15.9 billion
- Gaming Machines: DKK 12.3 billion
- Online Casino: DKK 12.2 billion
- Casinos: DKK 2.8 billion
Cumulative GGR 2020-2022:
- Online Casino: DKK 7.7 billion
- Betting: DKK 6.6 billion
- Gaming Machines: DKK 2.7 billion
- Casinos: DKK 744 million
Over the past three years, the Danish appetite for gambling has shifted to the online space, with the market showing a preference for games of chance.
Even when we looked at the last three months of data supplied by the DGA, it supports the belief that online gambling continues to grow in Denmark even after the lockdown restrictions were lifted.
