Legal Sports Betting is Now Live in Tennessee!
By Jeff Osienya Nov 03, 2020 IndustryBettors in Tennessee can now enjoy placing wagers on their favorite sports events after sitting tight since the legal sports betting law was enacted in May 2019. DraftKings FanDuel, BetMGM, and Action 24/7 started taking bets on Sunday. On Sunday the 1st of November, Tennessee officially became the 20th state or jurisdiction in the USA to launch a regulated sports betting market. Legal betting in the state made a formal premier at one minute past midnight, when the calendar turned November, right on schedule after preparations were completed by the Tennessee Education Lottery Cooperation (TEL). The long wait is finally over for sports bettors in the state, since the bill to authorize sports betting was passed into law back in May 2019.
At launch, there are already four online sports betting operators taking bets in the state; DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Tennessee Action 24/7 which is the only local operator of the lot. With DraftKing’s Tennessee debut, the Nasdaq listed sports betting giant will now have its presence across nine different states in the country, more than any other legal sportsbook operator in the USA. FanDuel, one of the biggest DraftKing’s competitors in the US comes at a close second with a presence in 8 states including the new Tennessee platform.
Aside from the four sportsbooks that are currently accepting wagers, three more operators have submitted their applications for entry into the newly launched Tennessee sports betting market according to a TEL spokesperson. The three books in question, WynnBet, William Hill, and Churchill Down’s BetAmerica are expected to start operating in the Volunteer State in the coming weeks.
Which Sports Can Locals Wager on in Tennessee’s New Sports Betting Market?
One of the best things about the fresh sports betting market of the Volunteer State is that it offers a fully-fledged menu. On top of the expected wagers on major games that comprise pre-season events and drafts, locals can also make money from predicting the outcomes of events that aren’t allowed by the law in other gambling legal states.
For example, placing wagers on the Olympics is allowed with the likes of eSports also added to the menu. However, there’s a caveat for eSports where every single league must give an okay for its matches. Better yet, Tennessee has also broken away from the norm of taking collegiate sports betting out of the equation as is the case in many other states. But then, the state doesn’t allow both pre-match and in-play proposition bets for college sporting events.
When it comes to actual staking of wagers, the Volunteer State only allows bettors to place their bets via mobile devices because there aren’t any land-based casinos in the state. Just like what most states have been doing, non-residents can also take part in sports betting in the state, as long as they are within the state line, a measure that GPS location services in the sports betting app will enforce.
