Neuralink Technology: The Future of Online Casino Accessibility
By Shane Addinall Oct 31, 2024Accessibility is revolutionising online casinos. Emerging tech, from Neuralink’s mind-controlled interface to Blindsight’s vision-restoring potential, promises to make gaming more inclusive, expanding enjoyment and opportunity for everyone in the digitalAccessibility is becoming more critical in the world of online casino design and development, thanks to the growing demand for more inclusive digital spaces. According to a 2023 World Health Organization report, over 1.3 billion people globally experience some form of limitation when it comes to their sight, hearing, mobility, or cognitive limitations.
Accessibility benefits both players and casino operators. Online casinos grow their active player base in territories they are already established in, and players enjoy their favourite casino games thanks to the equality of access created by the internet.
As this trend unfolds, more casinos need to explore how emerging technologies like Neuralink could reshape the way players interact with their games, allowing players with disabilities to participate fully in online gambling.
How Neuralink Helps Paralysed Players
Neuralink’s breakthrough brain-computer interface (BCI) technology already shows how tech can bridge physical limitations and restore autonomy for those with disabilities.
This aligns perfectly with their stated mission:
Quote“[To] create a generalised brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow.”
In early 2024, Neuralink launched its first human trial with Noland Arbaugh, a participant paralysed from the shoulders down due to an accident. Within a month of using the Neuralink device, Arbaugh could control a laptop cursor with his mind alone. Just weeks later, he could play chess—a pastime he'd once believed lost forever.
In a second trial conducted later that year, a participant named Alex demonstrated remarkable improvements. Five minutes into his first experience with Neuralink’s system, he gained control over his laptop's cursor and advanced beyond previous records. Within days, Alex played a complex first-person shooter and popular esports title, Counter-Strike, and used CAD software to design a custom 3D charging clip for his Neuralink device—purely through thought.
BCIs allow players to interact directly with the casino’s controls, including its banking systems, game systems, customer service options, responsible gambling tools, and more. Neuralink technology, which Musk playfully called “levitation”, takes the saying “If you can think it, you can achieve it” to a whole new level.
How Blindsight Opens Doors for New Players
Never happy to rest on their laurels, the Neuralink team is already expanding the spoke of the technology to specifically assist people with visual impairments, including those who are fully blind. The technology has been so well received that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given it the coveted “Breakthrough Device designation”.
The FDA explains the merit of the designation as follows:
Quote“FDA breakthrough device designation is granted to novel medical devices that have the potential to provide more effective treatment or diagnosis. This includes devices subject to premarket approval applications (PMAs), premarket notification (510(k)), or requests for De Novo designation.”
This means that Neuralink has been given the green light to get the technology to market without a series of hurdles that could impede a new medical development that has yet to prove its value and potential to the US government.
What we understand of the technology is limited to Elon Musk’s statements, which explained that it will allow those with blindness to see by bridging the gap between the visual cortex and the part of the brain that processes images.
Musk stated in a keynote:
Quote"Even if someone has never had vision ever like they were born blind, we believe that we can still restore vision using Neuralink."
Its early iteration, which Musk explained is already being successfully tested in monkeys, allows users to see low-fidelity images akin to early Nintendo (8-bit) graphics. However, with tweaking and improvements, it could “exceed normal human vision.”
The Future of Neural Tech and Gambling
The online casino sector has always been in love with bleeding-edge technology. This intense desire to adopt and integrate new developments into the casino space has given us everything from Free Spins promotions (where only cash was first available) to the ultra-smooth mobile gaming we enjoy today, as well as high-fidelity live streaming games and blockchain-based provably fair gambling.
It is great to see the market looking beyond just creating new experiences and beginning to investigate how it can share the existing suite of gaming opportunities with as wide an audience as possible.
If Neuralink and Blindsight are the beginning of what can be achieved with BCIs, meshing these developments with the potential of the burgeoning AI sector could see us living in a world where no one is excluded from participating in not only gambling online but any other part of life simply due to an unfortunate roll of the genetic dice or being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
