Why Incognito Mode is Not Enough to Safeguard Online Gambling
By Shane Addinall Jan 16, 2024 TechnologyMany users opt for incognito mode to securely play online casino games. This method has been proven to be vulnerable to data tracking. There are alternatives, such as crypto gambling, to increase your player safety.Online casino players are becoming more aware of online safety issues and are looking for ways to increase measures to play safely.
One way many users aim for this is by accessing online gambling sites via Incognito Mode on browsers like Google Chrome. While it works to an extent, it’s not necessarily enough, and there is still an opportunity for breaches.
Lawsuit Over Incognito Mode
Many believe that switching to Incognito Mode removes the opportunity for data tracking. However, recently, this has been proven to be incorrect.
Google agreed to settle a consumer privacy lawsuit of $5 billion in damages after allegations of data being tracked even while users were browsing via incognito mode. The lawsuit focused on Google Chrome’s incognito mode, which gives a false sense of security when surfing the net.
Internal Google emails shown in the lawsuit revealed that users in incognito mode still had their searches tracked and used for measuring web traffic and ads.
The lawsuit claiming millions of individuals have been affected, originally filed in 2020, has reached a preliminary settlement agreement. The plaintiffs' lawyers sought $5000 in compensation for all users whose data was tracked by Google Analytics or Ad Manager services while browsing in private mode. While the total amount would’ve been around $5 billion, that won’t be the settlement amount. There is no information on the amount per the preliminary settlement.
According to the lawsuit, Google intentionally deceives users, selling the idea that incognito provides complete privacy. Instead, it still gathers information on users, their interests and their internet usage. The formal settlement will be available for court approval by the 24th of February, 2024.
Not a First
It is clear that class action lawsuits are being used as a way to challenge all big tech companies when it comes to data privacy within the US. In August 2023, Google paid $23 million in one of its long-running cases regarding third-party access to user browsing data.
In 2022, Meta, the Facebook parent company, agreed to pay $725 million due to user data usage.
The case regarding Google’s incognito mode just shows that ‘secret browsing’ options are not necessarily secure, and users may still be vulnerable. When it comes to online casino gambling, there are alternative options to ensure a more secure gaming experience.
Anonymous Gameplay With Crypto
Incognito mode may not help with safe online gambling as much as you need it to, but there are other ways you can increase the safety of playing casino games online. One of the most popular ways is crypto gambling.
Many benefits come with crypto casino gameplay which includes the opportunity to utilise anonymous gameplay and additional security. Other benefits of crypto gaming include faster transactions, provably fair games and bigger/more frequent promotions.
