Recently, the UK Gambling Commission released its revised three-year corporate strategy.
The updated strategy outlines all the key areas regulatory work will focus on between 2024 and 2027. Let’s take a look.
Focus for the Next Three Years
The revised corporate strategy, ‘Gambling Regulation in a Digital Age, ’ shows the UKGC’s dedication to implementing decisions as per the government’s White Paper, ‘High Stakes—Gambling Reform for a Digital Age’.
The key priorities focus on leveraging data and analytics that will allow for more effective regulations, improving the core operational functions, and implementing evidence-based requirements for its licensees. It also places focus on the successful regulation of the National Lottery.
Other focus points include prioritising cross-cutting, which includes reviewing the Commission's people plan and approach to stakeholder engagement to ensure that all the right resources are available for effective regulation.
According to Commission Chair Marcus Boyle, they will implement an ambitious programme meant to enhance the effectiveness of regulation. There will be a new data innovation hub to make smarter use of data. Boyle also said they will increase the transparency of their work to raise the standards within the gambling industry.
Goals and Commitments
The Commission chair says the goal is to create a fair, safe, and crime-free gambling market where the interests of consumers and the wider public are protected. With this strategy, the UKGC will improve gambling regulation and take a step towards this gaming market.
Commission CEO Andrew Rhodes also pointed out the UKGC’s commitment to maintaining its high standards with an evidence-based approach. The UKGC collaborates with industry stakeholders locally and internationally to address common challenges such as illegal gambling.
The objective is to be an authority backed by evidence and data. They are dedicated to tackling misinformation, digging deeper into facts, and bringing the best possible outcome to the public. Rhodes states that their Gambling Survey for Great Britain can be seen as one example of how they are looking to embrace new data and intelligence.
He concluded by saying that it’s important for the Commission to maintain its high standards for gambling consumers while working with the rest of the industry to resolve any issues as quickly as possible. The UKGC will keep working across borders to tackle issues like illegal gambling and gather more knowledge that can be shared to ensure the best regulatory practice.
A Better Tomorrow
The updated 3-year strategy shows the Commission’s dedication to understanding the gambling industry and its developments over the last couple of years.
The primary key points focused on in the updated corporate strategy include:
- Making use of data and analytics for more effective gambling regulation
- Enhancing their core operational functions
- Setting clear evidence-based requirements for licensees
- Addressing all issues in a proactive manner as early as possible
- The successful regulation of the National Lottery
The ultimate focus is to successfully change the gambling landscape and create a fair and crime-free gambling market.
