Esports Integrity Commission Steps Up Anti-Fraud Partnerships
By Shane Addinall Jul 10, 2021 LegalityESIC continues to grow support from gambling regulators, betting platforms, Esports tournament hosts and more as they strive to eradicate match-fixing and odds manipulation from the Esports scene. In many respects, games of chance are not viewed as favourably as games of skill. For the most part, there is an appreciation of any event that sees one person or team besting an equally matched opponent using their abilities.
However, there is a downside, and that is the human element. Whenever a person is responsible for the outcome of a match there is the chance to influence the outcome of a contest and in so doing benefit from it through match-fixing or odds manipulation.
Addressing match-fixing and other forms of manipulation is a hot topic for gambling regulators. Not only in terms of traditional sports events but also in the Esports arena.
To this end, the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) was founded by members of the traditional sports integrity community to serve and protect the best interests of bettors, Esports teams and betting operators.
Strength In Numbers
While only five years old, ESIC has done an amazing job in garnering global attention for its mission and already boasts support from highly regarded gambling regulators, including the UK Gambling Commission, the Malta Gaming Authority, the Nevada State Gaming Control Board, and the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission.
In addition to gaming regulators, they have signed 18 Anti-Corruption Supporters, including the likes of Betway and Entain Plc, 5 international Esports Federations, and 5 Official & Supporting Partners, including tech giant Intel.
ESIC has also partnered with 15 established Esports tournament operators such as Dreamhack, ESL and Allied Esports to ensure that everything possible is being done to protect all stakeholders during these events because of the large amount of betting that takes place.
In 2021 the ESIC has put their power of these agreements into play issuing bans to no less than four players found to be cheating in two separate tournaments. They have also provided match-fixing and betting fraud-related data to Valve Entertainment and EPIC Games pertaining to their respective events.
Team Ultimate Joins the Fight
The latest addition to the ESIC entourage of anti-corruption supports is the US-based turnkey betting platform Ultimate Tournament.
ESIC Commissioner, Ian Smith, said:
“We are happy to welcome Ultimate Tournament as an Anti-Corruption Supporter of ESIC. Our anti-corruption supporters play an important role in our mission to deter cheating and fraudulent activity within betting. By joining ESIC, Ultimate Tournament has displayed its commitment to playing its part in maintaining the integrity of esports. We look forward to working with Ultimate Tournament to investigate suspicious betting activity, and curb cheating and betting fraud within esports.”
Alex Pickett, CEO of Ultimate Tournament, supported this saying:
“In order for esports to grow, and for users to have the safe experience they deserve, we believe it is imperative to work together as an industry to set a standard for fair play, and to enforce those standards universally. We are very happy to have the opportunity to work with ESIC and join the fight against match fraud and help push esports to the next level!”
Given they cover an astounding 40,000 betting markets and returns the odds on more than 3000 matches and competitions each month Ultimate are the perfect partners for ESIC in their quest to eradicate any form of game-breaking interference from Esports competition.
