Boxing Returns with Summer Fight Nights
By Glen James Jun 10, 2020 OpinionGamblersPick look ahead to the upcoming return fights for boxing in June including Shakur Stevenson.Live boxing is back! The action will finally return to American soil throughout June as promotional stable Top Rank showcase several events.
Following the UFC’s comeback, it’s boxing’s turn to make a welcomed return to the fray and Las Vegas will once again be the host city. Meanwhile, high-profile names will also feature in Mexico at a later stage.
The opening show is set to take place on June 9th in Nevada, with the company’s return card being played out at an empty MGM Grand Conference Center.
No fans will be allowed to be in attendance. The only people that are permitted will be the fighters themselves, their coaches and teams, officials including referee and judges and production personnel that will work with the event.
Bob Arum’s Top Rank have been busy working with the Nevada State Athletic Commission in order to get the fight calendar back up and running through June.
There will also be more events scheduled throughout the rest of the summer in July as well, which will be welcomed news for fans.
The organisation will be showcasing the fight cards on Tuesday and Thursday nights, with these set to be shown live on ESPN for American audiences.
So, with the news that patient boxing fans have been waiting for for some time, here are the upcoming details of the imminent returning cards across America.
June 9 (Las Vegas)
The opening fight date from Top Rank sees one of the biggest rising stars of the sport return to the ring, albeit in somewhat of a mismatch.
Shakur Stevenson is still regarded as a prospect but he has already got his hands on world honours, having claimed the WBO featherweight title in October last year.
Although, his 126lbs crown will not be on the line in this comeback clash as he faces off with little-known Puerto Rican Felix Caraballo.
The American starlet is 1/4* with Betfair a widely expected knockout victory in this Las Vegas main event match-up.
Meanwhile, female featherweight contender Mikaela Mayer also features as she prepares to collide with Nigerian Helen Joseph.
The unbeaten former American amateur standout and Olympian will look to continue her charge towards world title success when she enters the ring again here.
She will take to proceedings at a sizeable odds-on 1/20* favourite with William Hill to see out another career victory in the paid ranks.
June 11 (Las Vegas)
Just two days later in the Nevada desert the live action continues with another big card from the MGM Grand Conference Center.
This time it will be headlined by former super-bantamweight champion Jessie Magdaleno as he collides with Miami-based Dominican Yenifel Vicente.
The latter challenger has proved he packs a punch but Magdaleno has the experience at the elite level and is aiming to get into contention for a shot at 126lbs.
Though this bout will take place at super-featherweight based on the timing and current ongoing situation for the sport.
Magdaleno will enter the ring as an odds-on 1/9* favourite with Bet365 to have his hand raised and avoid any possible banana skins before an assault at world honours.
The California-born southpaw lost his former super-bantamweight strap back in April 2018 when he was halted by Ghanian Isaac Dogboe in 11 rounds.
He has since bounced back though, recording a comfortable unanimous decision win over fellow American Rico Ramos last year. Vicente is 13/2* with Sky Bet for a big upset in front of an empty crowd.
Also on this card is the battle between Adam Lopez and Luis Coria. The pair will trade leather at featherweight before the headline event on American territory.
Lopez was previously seen dropping former world champion Oscar Valdez before being stopped in seven rounds last November.
That bout came on short notice and, having given a decent account of himself against a strong opponent, he is now regarded as a massive odds-on 1/20* front runner with bet365 for a triumph over Coria here.
The latter little-known challenger is a 12/1* underdog with Paddy Power to spring a huge surprise in this clash.
