A Promising Future for German iGaming
By Shane Addinall Aug 17, 2022 IndustryWhen the German iGaming market launched with a blank page for slot providers, concerns arose. One year later, top providers joined the budding market and failing to launch now just seems like a slow start. To say the regulated iGaming market launched with an enormous anti-climax in Germany is an understatement. Because the government of the largest European state ventured into gambling regulation with an iron fist, little to no operators passed the licensing process at first. More than a year later, there seems to be a light at the end of the tax and wager-limit-laden tunnel.
Despite the rigid laws of the Fourth Interstate Treaty, operators persevere with license applications, and a few have cracked the code. Industry revenue estimates of €3.3 billion in 2024 may be the right number to motivate more providers in the treacherous licensing process.
News of new content deals and approved licenses indicate a change on the horizon for German iGaming.
Brimming with Potential
Classified as a grey gambling industry for a very long time, all 16 German states unanimously enforced the Fourth Interstate Treaty on Gambling on 1 July 2021. This allows slot, poker, and sports betting operators to apply for federal licenses and provide nationwide services to Germans.
However, much to the dismay of German gamblers, the government’s approved list of slot, casino, and poker operators was empty when the market launched. The scrupulous legislation set out in the new Interstate Treaty led to zero approved license holders for these verticals. A few months later, certain operators bowed out of the process, explaining that once the licensing regime became more operator and player-friendly, they would reconsider.
With a population of over 83 million and 87.4% of them using mobile internet, Germany is brimming with potential. As one of the most technologically advanced nations, Germany can become a serious global contender for the largest iGaming market.
Persevere When it Seems Impossible
When it seemed like no online casino games would make the cut, news broke of an approved slot provider. The announcement came a month before the new federal regulatory body stepped in, and the approval was token of hope. Since then, six more slot providers have joined the list of licensees, and their libraries have continuously expanded.
Instead of focusing on the challenges, the operators looked past the strict laws on limits and the high taxes and moved ahead with possibilities in mind. This positions the license holders at a significant advantage, with the best seats in the house to observe how Germany’s gambling sector buds into its flourishing potential.
The newest participants in the transformation of Germany’s iGaming market include game providers, BGaming, and Playson. Both software providers joined hands with licensed operators, bringing premium slot entertainment to German players. BGaming took the regulations in its stride and improved technical details to secure approval for the country.
With titles from these top providers, the growth of the German gambling market gains momentum, and their success will attract the best in the iGaming industry.
