Doctor Who Visits the Realm of Blockchain in New Virtual Trading Card Game
By Shane Addinall Aug 17, 2020 IndustryReality Gaming Group, in collaboration with the BBC, plan to launch a Doctor Who themed card exchange game in the British broadcaster’s first foray into the blockchain market later on this year.Doctor Who will soon join Star Trek as one of the few brands that place their characters on the blockchain as Reality Gaming Group, in collaboration with the BBC, release Doctor Who: Worlds Apart in October 2020.
How will it work?
Soon fans will be able to collect and trade digital versions of their favourite characters and do battle with friends. Just like regular cards, special editions and rare, high-value cards featuring Doctors, companions, allies and enemies will keep the excitement at an all-time high.
Reality Gaming Group’s Tony Pearce explained the concept of this release, saying:
"We are tremendously excited to be working with BBC Studios to bring Doctor Who’s huge global community an exciting new digital experience based on a pastime we all know and love – trading cards. The cards used in Doctor Who: Worlds Apart are both functional and collectable, so fans can actually own a piece of the game while they play.”
Each trading card will be tokenized into non-fungible (also known as a nifty) or unique tokens that cannot be copied and function like a digital collectable that can be used or traded. The additional technology of blockchain security allows for genuine ownership which is reassuring, especially during a time of scams and piracy concerns.
During the October launch, limited edition cards, sold in packs of five, will be available for purchase.
The PC game is expected to follow in 2021 and this will precede the mobile release. Initially, the game will only be available on a digital asset trading platform, but the company expects to expand to trade with a 3rd party platform like OpenSea in the future.
Why Doctor Who?
According to Reality Gaming Group’s Kevin Jorge, Doctor Who is one of the most loved and long-running shows on TV, developers will have 56 years’ worth of content to draw from. He commented:
“This is what BBC Studios does so well, exploring new technologies and bringing our most iconic brand to an area of the gaming industry which we’re sure will engage and thrill fans.”
The group, who debuted their first blockchain-powered augmented reality game, Reality Clash, in 2019, has over two decades of experience in mobile, PC, augmented and virtual reality gaming platforms, feel they are up to the challenge of bringing these cards to life.
Given the huge fan base of Doctor Who and the appeal of virtual reality as a form of escapism, there is no doubt that this game will do just as well, if not better, than Pokemon Go which took the gaming landscape by storm a few years ago. And, with the wealth of storylines to tap into where your favourite characters get into all sorts of sticky situations, the collaboration is bound to be a winner.
