GamCare to Conduct a New Study on Online Gambling Behavior
By Jeff Osienya Dec 01, 2020 IndustryGamCare, City University, LAB, and Ignition House have linked up to carry out a new behavioral research study that will offer more insight on the habits of online gamblers in a bid to boost the safety of gambling via the internet.GamCare, UK’s leading charity institution for providing information, counsel, and support for anyone affected by problem gambling has teamed up with City University and two highly acclaimed research agencies; the Ignition House and LAB to undertake a new joint research venture. GamCare’s trio is taking on this mission to have a better understanding of the behaviors of online gamblers so that they can have a more reliable approach for identifying potential indicators of vulnerable online gamers.
Based on GamCare’s statement on its official website, the new online gambling research will be carried out in two stages. The first stage of the research will involve a qualitative study where 20 respondents who have taken part in online gambling activities over the last 6 months will be answering questions about their experiences. The second stage will be a larger quantitative research with a much higher number of participants.
The charitable gambling organization reiterated that the main objective of this study is to collect information and devise ways that will make online gambling safer than it currently is.
Preparations for Phase One of the Survey are Already Underway
As it stands, GamCare’s research unit has already started looking for participants who are interested in taking part in the first segment of the study. Eligible online gamblers who would like to participate in the survey have been asked to register their interest, with the window for registration closing by Christmas. Taking that into account, there’s a good chance that the first phase of the survey will start early next year.
Phase one of GamCare’s study will comprise 1-hour long interviews between each of the participating respondents and an interviewer with experience in research methodology. Depending on what the interviewee prefers, the session will take place via a video call or a phone call, and the researchers will be seeking answers that will assist the team to get a better grasp of the online gambling behavior of the respondents.
Of note here is the fact that in the research, there won’t be right or wrong answers, at least according to GamCare’s official statement on the matter. Every input from the participants will be taken as valuable insight that will inform the triad on the experiences, behaviors, habits, and feelings that online gamblers have towards the activity.
Participants of the 1-hour interview will also be receiving a £40 Amazon gift card as a token of appreciation for the valuable feedback that they’ll offer for the research study – feedback that will foster positive change for the online gambling community at large.
GamCare Continues to Push for Industry Transformation
GamCare has been steadfast in its fight against problem gambling by consistently developing new ways that improve the safety of online gamblers. About a month ago, UK’s leading charity for responsible gaming rolled out a new toolkit aimed at assisting customers who are facing gambling-related financial harms.
The problem gambling institution also recently unveiled a new chatroom exclusively for women affected by problem gambling to give them a safe space where they can talk about their problem gambling-related dilemmas and effectively get guidance and support.
