India’s Heads Up Poker Championship
This first-ever Heads Up Poker Championship kicks off on the 24th of November 2020. The game is designed in the No-Limit Hold’em format and has various rules and restrictions that increases the excitement levels of experiencing this game.
The Championship is a knockout-style tournament will have players competing to get to the top. There are 6 rounds during which 64 players will compete for the Championship trophy.
Heads Up is one of the most strategic forms of poker available as it doesn’t just involve playing the cards but playing against other players.
In these Heads Up matches, aggression becomes an important part of the gameplay ‘strategy’ as players are posting blinds with every hand. There is no sitting around, waiting for great cards, instead, it’s a fight to the finish.
The Lowdown on the Knockout Tournament
The tournament is hosted by leading pioneer of online poker, 9Stacks, and comes with a INR 5500 buy-in. It’s important to note that there are no second chances provided during this tournament. As such, players have one opportunity to take down their opponents with every level if they wish to make it to the top.
The game starts out with 64 competitors but quickly advances with the number of players reduced through knockouts.
The final round will see the top 2 players compete for the Championship Trophy and the top cash prize. The winner will be crowned the first ‘Heads Up – Poker Champion of India’ and will receive a INR 200K cash prize.
Inspiring the Love of Poker
9Stacks Co-Founder, Sudhir Kamath, explained that the idea is for two poker players to go head to head against each other, giving the feel of a boxing match.
There is adrenaline, excitement and building anticipation that increases with each knockout round. Sudhir Kamath, 9Stacks co-founder, commented:
“For the first time, we’ve been able to conceptualize a tournament in this format which will identify one winner out of a select field of 64 players – someone truly deserving to be called a CHAMPION.”

Kamath believes this first of its kind, Heads Up Poker Championship, is the perfect example of such exciting avenues in the promotion of poker.
