Player Protection Has a New Hero - Global Gaming Alliance
By Shane Addinall Feb 13, 2022 IndustryBig names in the online gaming industry have established a safer gaming champion. The Global Gaming Alliance seeks to change and encourage responsible practices worldwide. With their sights set on a safer gaming industry for all, gaming and wagering platforms combined their powers to create the Global Gaming Alliance (GGA). The alliance comprises gambling companies DraftKings and Entain, mobile gaming brands Habby and 89Trillion, and Facebook’s holding company, Meta. These industry experts plan on addressing universal industry challenges.
As their first order of business, the GGA published a 23-page white paper as ‘Guidance for Gaming Companies, Game Players, and Advertisers’. Titled ‘Responsible Gaming is Everybody’s Business’, the white paper speaks about industry statistics and the rapid growth we’ve seen in the past two years.
Employee well-being, player inclusivity, and transparency from gaming providers are all topics the body seeks to address. They believe the gaming industry has a tremendous impact on society and, through collaboration and shared experience, it can be a positive one.
Working on the Numbers
The GGA’s foremost priority is player protection, which encompasses the causes of gambling harm, fraud, and addiction in the gaming industry. Their white paper stipulates that the industry had 2.9 billion users by the end of 2021 and the demographics of players expanded as the numbers did.
They mention responsible gaming solutions like parental controls and self-regulation tools, then explain how the next step is to examine how industry stakeholders can work together to make it better. The forum calls for better practices, safeguards, and synergy between peers.
As the title hints, the white paper is for everyone who has a stake in the global gaming industry and it is available to players, providers, and anyone who wishes to learn from the body. The alliance believes there is a sincere yearning for a change in the industry and guidelines in their white paper may lead to a sustainable ecosystem.
Included in the material are case studies from each of the alliance members and these focus on the three pillars: Players, Employees, and Industry.
Level the Playing Field
GGA’s projects include the support of Meta’s ‘Black Gaming Creator Program’ and the alliance encourages gaming developers to create more diverse demographics in their creations. Statistics show that almost half of all gamers steer clear of titles that do not represent their identity meaningfully. The ideas encompass characters or themes inspired by female protagonists, people of colour, the LGBTQ+ community, and disabled persons.
The DraftKings case study focused on how happy employees lead a company to greater success. Diversity and employee safety are focal points in this pillar where they talk about the wellbeing of employees and company hiring policies. GGA urges companies to have a diverse workforce as they believe a more diverse workforce directly relates to broad experience and perspective within the employee pool.
Entain launched a program to improve diversity in companies. EnTrain focused on the grass-root level by presenting under-represented groups with better access to education and further training. The program offers access to technological expertise, and they have a goal of reaching over 1 million people by 2030.
A Call for Everyone to be Responsible
GGA sees a future where all parties involved in the gaming ecosystem focus on responsible practices to make it fun for everyone. They point out in their conclusion that everyone must play their part for the system to work.
The mammoth growth experienced in the gaming world prompted companies and regulators to take better care. With GGA as the industry’s new hero for safer gaming, the future of gaming may indeed be rose-coloured.
