Sweden Launches ‘Games Need Rules’ Campaign
By Shane Addinall Feb 12, 2022 IndustrySweden’s gambling inspectorate launched their new safer gambling campaign skits published on social media. The ‘Games Need Rules’ videos portray humorous yet awkward situations where cheaters are involved.Spelinspektionen launched a nationwide awareness campaign themed ‘Games Need Rules’. Since the 7th of February 2022, the short skits have appeared on social media and the gaming inspectorate’s website. The video clips include a famous Swedish actor who endorses the initiative through an extended monologue also on the SGA’s page.
Spelinspektionen believes the campaign highlights why it is important for Swedish punters to choose licensed operators to wager with. The longer video on the regulator’s website explains the advantages of gambling at a licensed and regulated site.
The launch comes after the Swedish government reconsidered new deposit limits and announced future amendments in gambling regulations. SGA’s clampdown on offshore operators is ongoing as well.
What’s in It for the Players?
Spelinspektionen hopes to empower Swedish punters by educating them on the advantages of gambling with licensed online providers. The three short satires include friends and family members playing board games and some of them cheat. Anders Lundin, a Swedish actor and writer narrates the humorous skits which link to an extended video starring him.
The three videos use board games, which the SGA admits don’t require a licence, and characters make up their own rules in a game of ten-pin bowling, scrabble, and a quiz. SGA wishes to emphasise how unsupervised platform providers come up with their own rules and punters might lose in the process. The video informs punters that any Swedish licensed provider will display the inspectorate’s logo.
By humorously approaching the cheating theme, the SGA hopes viewers learn how risky it is to stake their money in non-regulated casinos. By clicking on the shorter social media video’s users will link to the campaign’s main video that explains what their best bet is. Lundin lists the benefits of choosing licensed operators and why it is important for gambling to be regulated.
Making Good Choices
The country’s mission against unlicensed operators continues and they hope the ‘Games Need Rules’ campaign will encourage players to make the right choice. The regulator took a different approach this time as they hunt down companies who passively accept bets from Swedes. They force exposed unlicensed operators to block Swedish players from their sites.
“The aim is to inform the public that there is a choice to be made, between gaming companies that have a Swedish licence and gaming companies that do not have it,” said Yvonne Hejdenberg, head of communications at Spelinspektionen.
By understanding the benefits of gambling with a Swedish licensed platform, the inspectorate empowers punters to make the right choice. When playing for money, the stakes are much higher than that of a game board played just for fun. Consumers could not only lose money at unscrupulous black-market operators but are also exposed to developing at-risk gambling behaviours.
The Player-Protection Bandwagon
Events from the past two years in online gambling show how most regulators aim to improve player-protection protocols. The UK launched a full gambling reform in 2020 and other markets impose stricter laws as they uncover risk areas. Spelinspektionen’s ‘Games Need Rules’ approach which offers words to the wise players out there is a fresh take on empowering consumers.
