The Maturation of the Danish Online Gambling Market
By Shane Addinall Nov 02, 2020 IndustryThe Danish Online gambling industry shows its maturity after only 7 years, as the mobile market dominates this arena, leaving the land-based segment on a steady decline. Read further for the full statistics involved in the evolution. With the prevalence of the digital world today, we are seeing a massive increase in online gambling trends in certain countries around the globe. One of the most notable growth spurts has been witnessed in Denmark over the past 7 years after gambling was partially liberalised in 2012.
The Danish Gambling Authority has undertaken to monitor the evolution in the market and has given us very specific statistics to back the marked change.
Jan Madsen, the Director of organisation had this to say:
“There is no doubt that the Danes’ preference to gamble online is reflected in the market development. The development in the gambling market seems to follow the general technological development, where an increasingly larger part of our everyday life takes place online.”
The rate at which the online gambling industry is outpacing the land-based gambling segment in this country is significant, and if trends persist, could see it put to bed brick and mortar casinos in the next decade or so.
Online vs Land-Based Gambling
The marked growth in Denmark has seen the online gambling industry overtake gambling done on the ground. In just seven years, internet gambling has seen a 23% growth.
In 2012, online casino gaming had a 31% stake in the market, whereas the latest stats in 2019 witnesses a 54% majority. This makes Denmark’s stats the second highest in Europe overall in this category.
Sweden is the top contender, where online gambling dominates 59% of the market. Coming in a close third is Norway with over 50% majority as well. These three Scandinavian countries boast the highest ratios on the continent.
Mobile Leads the Way
It is evident from the studies that mobile is now the market leader in the online segment, with 61% of the internet market share. This is a massive ratio increase from 2012 when mobile devices only attributed to 11% of the entire online market platform share.
Of course, the increased technological advancements in this arena have been a big factor in this growth. Mobile phones are easily able to perform as well, if not better than desktop computers did a few years ago.
The new processing power combined with the advancements in instant browser play technology have obviously been invaluable to the marketspace.
Spending Anomaly
While the overall Gross Gaming Revenue has grown from a number of DKK 7.8 billion to a hefty DKK 9.8 billion in 2019, a strange trend in spending occurred between 2018 and 2019.
The average spend on gambling by Danish players was steadily on the rise, until 2019. In 2018, the average spend per person on gambling by players over the age of 18 years was at an all-time high of DKK40.7 per week. Much to the contrary of previous trends, this amount dropped to DKK40.4 just a year on.
The drop off is attributed to the decrease in land-based casino gaming and betting. So, despite the increased climb in online gambling, the overall gambling market has seen a decrease in revenues between these two years.
The commission, however, states that it is too soon to state whether this will represent a long-term trend or not, but that it would take a close look at the findings over the next few years to determine this.
Round-Up
One thing that we can all be sure of, is that leading European countries are experiencing an online boom. While countries like France still have a long way to go, there are definite signs that online casinos are the way of the future. But this is not a unique trend to gambling alone.
More and more buyers and sellers are turning to the digital space to bridge the gap for trade, internationally. The gambling market is simply following suit with universal trade trends.
